I should have just titled this hub "An Illustrated Guide to Boobs", because at first glance, that's what it appears to be. I assure you, however, that it is not all about cleavage, although it is about a piercing that is generally placed in or around it. Clearly one of the sexiest types of piercings available today, a sternum piercing (which is not surprisingly also referred to as a cleavage piercing) is a surface piercing placed directly in the center of the chest in the actual cleavage. Like all other surface piercings, it runs the risk of being prone to rejection if it is not done by a proper piercer using a specialized surface bar.

Please note that a standard straight barbell is the absolute worst piece of jewelry you can use. A titanium or stainless steel surface bar is considered to be the best option, although some places also use flexible jewelry. A surface bar is shaped like a staple. It goes into the body at a ninety-degree angle, tightly changes direction, travels under the skin at a consistent depth, then exits the body also at a ninety-degree angle. Generally speaking, flat areas use the staple-shaped bar whereas other, more curved areas, use an L-shaped or slightly W-shaped piece of jewelry.

When looking at the photos below (which, to be fair, include a photo of a MALE sternum piercing) keep in mind that a little redness around the entrance and exit points of the piercing is normal at first. Some redness is to be expected but will go away in time if you leave it alone and let it heal. But rejection of surface piercings is common. Rejection occurs when the body tries to heal itself by pushing out the foreign object it's detected in it's skin. Your body is naturally designed to repel anything that it thinks doesn't belong. This happens in much the same way the body would expel a splinter. All piercings, not just surface piercings, run the risk of rejection--and it's a risk you have to be willing to take. You might lay down $90 or more for a surface piercing that in the end will leave you with no metal and a small, red scar in a very noticeable place. That being said, don't go for a surface piercing if you're not okay with the possibility of this negative outcome. Most surface piercings fail NOT because they're impossible to heal but because they are done by inexperienced and incompetent piercers. BMEZine recommends going to a piercer who can show you actual pictures of healed surface piercings.

There are really only two types of sternum piercings: vertical sternum and horizontal sternum. I'm sure some people tend to get creative, as humans are prone to do when given license with their own flesh--I saw a back of neck/nape piercing that used a variety of curved and jeweled barbells to form the shape of the constellation Orion. Unfortunately, I was only able to uncover one original sternum piercings of that sort: it's the second picture shown down under the horizontal sternum piercings section. So if you've got one, please feel free to share it here!

If you're thinking about getting a sternum piercing, God speed and good luck! A sternum piercing is a beautiful adornment that perfectly accents a woman's natural assets.

wow it looks so hot i think i'm going to get one :)

It looks neat and all, but if you ever get a chest x-ray, these piercings may either be mistaken for pathology or hide it from the radiologist. Just putting that out there.

I got minedone yeaturday with dermals and it's hurt alott.. I'm not crazy covered in peircing type of person just you know a few in the ears.. But it hurt alot and it looks like I've bin shot in the chest coz of the blood. It's crazy but painful and I love it:) just be careful.. Alot of people pass out during it and if your skin is like mine it might take 2times before it's in.. Which is double the pain.

Can sternum piercings just be taken out or do you have to go back to the people who pierced it to remove it?

I got mine done about a month ago and I was surprised by how quick it healed. Normally, you would soak it in hot water twice a day. The way I did it was, I took a small shot glass and filled it with table salt and warm water. I would then tilt the cup into my chest and let it rest for about 10 minutes.

Getting it done wasn't so bad. The clamps hurt more than the actual needle. Problem is, if you don't have enough chest fat, if could reject or hurt a lot.

Please note: A sternum piercing can and will feel and bother the skin for quite sometime. Also if you plan on getting it done, bring a friend only because people have passed out. In the end, if your not happy with you, you can remove it yourself but I strongly recommend going back to the shop and asking them to remove it. Same goes when changing the bar.

Please don't attempt to do it at home. It's quite dangerous.

When I got mine done, the guy used a curved bar.

It still looks good though. And I'm very happy with it.

I got the microdermal done around Christmas time. Everyone says it hurts so much but mine didn't hurt at all... just a lot of pressure.. If you go to the pharmacy you can get whats called emla patches and you just put that on about an hour before getting the piercing ! And it doesn't hurt at all :) , sternum piercings are so sweet, i'm so glad i got mine !!

I got my sternum pierced two days ago. I have a feeling it was no pierced right and will reject. I love my piercing to death. I'm not sure where I should go to get it done properly. I live in Niagara Falls Canada. If anyone knows a good place to go it would be much appreciated.

Manoe 10 months ago

Kikki, If you live in Niagara and can find some time to venture to Toronto, there is Adrenaline in downtown Toronto with professionals who are experience. Consider checking them out. i got mine done there 4 months ago.

I got mine 4 days ago and the swelling's gone completely down, I was told to soak it with salt water solution 3 times a week or when i do vigarous activities and sweat as over cleaning can irritate it and cause more problems. Also not to be too gentle with it as this could cause hypersensitivity, meaning it'll hurt a lot more when it is toutched/changed. I love love love my piercing and so happy i got it, dind't hurt at all, just a little pinch and it was over with! highly reccomend them! there's a lot of stigma over your body rejecting them and things but essentially it's the same type of piercing as a naval/belly button and they last years!

I have had a sternum piercing for between 1 and 2 years now, there has been no infection, however there was bruising between the 2 balls for quite sometime. when the bruising went completely, a red/pink lump formed in between the 2 holes. i have been to several piercers to ask for advise but each seem to tell me something different... any advise on how to get rid of this lump as it really spoils the look of the piercing !!!
