How to Straighten Curly Hair

If your hair is naturally curly or wavy and you don't feel like taking the steps to work with and control your curly locks, there are ways to artificially straighten your untamed tresses. Some people opt for chemical straightening, or relaxing, which is done at a salon. However, this is costly and the process must be repeated at least once a year. Here is another way to straighten your hair, in the comfort of your own home:1.) In the shower, wash hair with a shampoo and conditioner set such as Pantene Pro-V Extra Straight or Frizz Ease Straight Ahead. Stay within the same product line, and don't use a 2-in-1 shampoo+conditioner as it doesn't provide enough conditioner.

2.) Once a week, after conditioning, apply a deep conditioner like Neutrogena Triple Moisture Daily Deep Conditioner and let it sit for 10-20 minutes (the longer the better) while you shower and shave. If you're really pressed for time and cannot afford to wait that long, check out Garnier Fructis Fortifying 3 Minute Masque instead.

3.) After getting out of the shower you have two options-- OPTION A Towel dry hair very gently. Rubbing hair vigorously with a towel causes friction that creates frizz, so pat it just enough so it's not dripping wet. Then apply a smoothing spray like Frizz Ease Straight Answer Straightening Spray from roots to ends. Comb through with a wide tooth comb to distribute evenly. Then blow dry hair using your fingers (no brushes!) If your hair is curly like mine, blow drying won't make it perfectly straight, but that's okay; that's where the straightening iron comes in. OPTION B Let hair air dry by itself. When it is still slightly damp, apply Frizz Ease Wind Down Relaxing Crème from roots to ends and comb through with a wide tooth comb.

4.) Now that your hair is completely dry, it's time for the straightening iron. I swear by Revlon's 170-Watt Perfect Heat Hair Straightener. Using a claw clip (they're easier on hair than a rubber band elastic) clip the entire front section of your hair, from the top of your ears up. Now focusing on the back section that is still down, the trick is to straighten very small pieces at a time. Beginning at the root, press a 2" section of hair between the flat irons and work your way down. If your hair is shoulder-length, each section should take about 5-10 seconds to straighten. Continue doing this all the way around. When you're finished with the bottom half, let down the top half and repeat the process. Make sure you turn off the iron when you're done.

Some people use CHI or GHD irons. These models come in either 1" or 2" wide and use ceramic heat, which maintains an even temperature at all times. I've heard rave reviews about them but never experienced it for myself. Plus, they can run you up to $150.

6.) To tame any leftover frizzies, I use Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Flawless Finishing Crème. You only need a tiny drop or two otherwise your scalp will look greasy. Place the drops in the palm of your hand, rub both hands together and distribute from the crown down to the ends. If your hair is extra long, you may want to use another drop to cover the middle section or body of the hair.

7.) Since using a flat iron can leave hair looking dry and lifeless, try Frizz Ease 100% Shine Glossing Mist. Hold can 8-10 inches away from hair and spray evenly for a glistening finish.

Curly-headed beauties normally have hair that is dryer than the rest of the world. Because of this, it is truly not necessary to wash your hair every single day. Every other day, or even every two days, is more than enough. If you must wash it every day, use as little shampoo as possible, or else be sure to use a moisturizing shampoo, since over-shampooing can create flakes.
