Reincarnation: Recognizing Past Life Dreams

83

By becauseilive

My first girlfriend, Jamie* (names have been changed), started breaking my heart in 2001 and didn't stop until five years later. Over the course of our two-year relationship and ten-year friendship, we played out a sick series of events involving addiction, codependency and insanity mixed in with profound love, loyalty and devotion. I credit her with the unlocking of my sexuality and, later, with my downfall into drug addiction. She was often distant and aloof; her parents had shown her little to no affection for the last twenty years. I was persistent and believed that love could conquer all, having been raised by a close-knit family that practiced love unconditional. She told me early on that she was going to break my heart, and I stuck with her regardless. We believed we were soulmates, twin stars that had once been forged as one in the heavens, torn asunder to roam the earth alone until we found each other once again. It was all very dramatic, but we were loopy for each other. It wasn't very long into the early days of our friendship before I began to feel like I had known Jamie before, in a lifetime far removed from this one. We knew each other too well, too intensely, for this to be our first go around. I sensed that we had known each other in a past life, it was something I felt and trusted beyond a shadow of a doubt. But my feelings were never confirmed until I started dreaming about us.

My past life dreams

The first time it happened, we were knee-deep into our present-day disaster and I was beginning to lose hope. I had not been able to save Jamie from herself, and I was losing her more and more each day no matter how hard I held on. In the dream, myself and another little girl are both orphans in a foreign country I don't recognize, but I know instinctively that it's somewhere in Europe. I am young, six or seven years old. I can't see myself but I know I have long brown hair, and I'm wearing a long white muslin dress with long sleeves and a blue ribbon tied around my waist. My playmate is dressed in similar attire, she is the same age as me and when I look at her dark brown eyes I immediately recognize her as being Jamie.

We are both in foster care with a woman who is the headmistress at an insane asylum. It has to be the late 1700s or early 1800s. The asylum was once a grand castle that was converted into a sanitarium for the criminally insane. We live there with the woman full-time, but she does not love us. The men are truly crazed, the worst of the worst, and the security is lax because the castle is surrounded on three sides by jagged cliffs leading into a raging sea. The girl and I are the only children; we have very little that is ours but we do have each other. We like to play on the small stretch shore behind the asylum, but our sanctuary is often disturbed by the patients who are free to roam the grounds. There is one elderly patient in particular, a schizophrenic man with a bedraggled face who frequently comes down to torment us but if I scream loud enough a guard will eventually come and haul him away.

One day we are playing with a round red ball, rolling it back and forth to each other. It is chilly outside, and windy, and as I roll it back to her the wind catches it and hurls it into the sea. My playmate, who is like a sister to me, rushes into the water after our toy and quickly gets sucked in by the undertow. I wade knee-deep into the icy water, crying and screaming and yelling for help that never comes. I am so small and I cannot save her. I watch as her little body gets thrown against the jagged rocks and then she is gone forever.

Other dreams came later, the most notable being the one where I came across the three headstones of a pioneer family that had died within months of each other in the mid-1800s. One was mine, one was my sister's (Jamie's) and the third was our father's. We had both died before him, and left him heartbroken. His depression was evident in the epitaph's he chose for our gravestones. Mine said, "Jaclyn, my angel" and had a carving of a young girl feeding chickens and doves. Jamie's said, "J. my shining star" and our father's simply said, "I rest with you girls now."

Past life dreams, essentially, are dreams that give you a glimpse into a previous life and they are different from regular dreams in the following ways:

PAST LIFE DREAMS HAVE HISOTIRCAL DETAIL

I have never been outside of the United States and I have never dreamt about far away lands. Indeed, I have never had any desire to leave my home, and yet I KNEW that I was in Europe by the size of the cliffs, the shape of the castle on the hill, and the biting coldness of the wind. I also knew the approximate year, and although I did not see her with my eyes during the dream, I knew in my mind that the headmistress always wore a black crepe dress with a high neckline and a brooch at her throat.

'The Sisters'
'The Sisters'

The clothing we wore as children was another huge clue, and when I awoke I remembered our dresses in great detail. In fact, as I was writing this article, I decided to do some research. I Googled "children's clothing 1800s" and came across a painting called 'The Sisters' that one website used to illustrate what young girls wore in the early 1800s, along with this explanation: "Simple lightweight muslin dress styles with a high cut empire line bodice seam of the early 1800s were worn with a slip. The dress was drawn together with a ribbon or sash just beneath the chest."

Regular dreams primarily consist of people, places and things that are familiar to you in the present. Past life dreams will most likely take place in the past, and will involve period clothing or historical settings.

PAST LIFE DREAMS ARE LOGICAL AND SEQUENTIAL

Regular dreams are often rapid and random. They are full of chaos. You start out in a classroom with your grandparents and then it's time to leave and you can't find your clothes so you hurry out the door and you're in your best friend's basement knocking down a wall. If something begins to frighten you, you can close your eyes tight in the dream and you'll either wake up or begin a new dream. In past life dreams, there is a logical sequence of events that cannot be changed. You are not in control; your subconscious mind is not creating the dream sequence and thus your subconscious mind is powerless to stop it. The dream, or I should say, the memory, is coming to you from a higher source, and all you can do is watch.

PAST LIFE DREAMS REVEAL UNHEALED ISSUES

Dreaming is a method of processing, and often dreams are highly symbolic and metaphorical. Close analyzation of our dreams can frequently reveal answers and lessons that our conscious minds have been unable to see. Past life dreams allow us a look at the past life origins of our present day fears. When people undergo past life regressions through hypnosis, the first instance they are brought to is usually the most traumatic moment in the most traumatic lifetime. The fear and desperation I felt in my own dream definitely qualified as traumatic. Why was I unable to let Jamie go when I knew it was the right thing to do? Why my insistence to hang on to her despite all odds? Was it because I had lost her before, and was not willing to lose her again?

Another clue is the element of water. In my present life I am not afraid of water but I am terrified of drowning. I have never had a near-drowning experience, never been strangled or suffocated or anything of the sort. My fear is outside the realm of logic, yet to me it is very real. Could my present-day fear be based on what I witnessed in my past-life experiences?

YOU APPEAR AS SOMEONE OTHER THAN YOURSELF

In most present life dreams you either see yourself as you look today from an outsider's point of view, observing your interactions, or you are living the dream from inside your body. Either way, you manifest in the present and your appearance stays the same as it looks at this exact moment. In past life dreams, you manifest at a different age or as a different gender, or race, with different religious beliefs.

PAST LIFE DREAMS JUST FEEL DIFFERENT

When you awake from a past life dream you are ultra-aware of it's importance. Your recollection of the dream is sharp and distinctive, it feels more like a long-lost memory than a subconcious concoction. And it never fades. Years later, you will still remember the smallest physical details and, especially, the emotions. The dream imprints itself onto your psyche and never goes away.

Wow this was so good. I have had this kind of dream and I agree, the whole thing has a completely different quality. It stands out from a regular dream dramatically. Great hub, thank you for sharing and for validating what I already suspected to be true.

Thank you sharing this thought provoking hub. The are healthy forms of codependency and unhealthy ones. I think it's important that we learn how to control the negative side that justifies harming ourself or others. And dreams gives us clues as to how we can win this internal struggle. Just my opion. Please see how I try to help others in new ways. Sincerely: Gary Eby, author and therapist.

Amazing Hub. Thank you for sharing something so personal. I've had the Jamie experience: the intensity, the surrealism, the : "She told me early on that she was going to break my heart, and I stuck with her regardless." (I need to quote you on that.) And then the dreams, and the believing. And the forever and ever.

I'm 25, and when I was a child I had a dream that I was an older man. I was seated at a round table, I wore a brown suit and had a small drink. There were large curtains hanging on the wall. And men and women dancing slowly in the middle of the floor. The women wore a big flowing dress. Like from 1860's or around that time.

I remember as a child I enjoyed swing dancing with my mom and one Christmas I asked for a suit and nothing else. I also enjoyed classical music and would pretend to tbe a conductor. I'm not sure i believe in past lives, but I'm not sure what caused that dream or my interest as a child. :D

I remember having a dream of where I was a beautiful 5'8" inches tall, light brown skin, long, black, silky hair, and people would bow before me. In the dream, my father was an old man with a native american chief hat on and we were in a forest of some sort but, not really knowing where I was. I am in real life a light-skinned African-American, short hair, 5'5 1/2" inches tall and not royal at all!

In my dream I was on a ship I was the second mate and there was some kind of trouble amoungst the crew about the course that we were headed. There was alot of pushing and shoving but no weapons drawn. I promised to talk to the captian for them and they calmed down. My uniform was blue and I wore a patch over my right eye.

I´m pretty sure that this is me in a previous life because usually when I dream it is gone in a few minutes after waking up whereas these ones stay with me.

Watching tennis this week. The Hopmans Cup in Perth and it was Great Britain vs Russia. I was barracking for Britain, but also felt a stronger desire that they beat the russians. I woke this morning, to see a man lying on top of bones, as if he had just jumped, been pushed or fallen and looked up to see a guard high up. The costumes fit an earlier era although the dream was pretty much in grey ... When I got out of bed, I felt like the man who had landed or as if I was getting up out of his body.

We had also been at the beach a few days before and there was a spot high on the cliff where 2 men were and it was as if they were clearing the energy.. I wondered why the energy there seemed so strongly linked to me.

So, thankyou for this hub. It is lovely and very interesting.

I have dreams in all different time periods which my now husband is always a part of. Though we are not always spouses we are typically lovers or very close friends. I have seen us old together with grown children and as young people who run away together. I reality we have been together for almost 20 years and the strangest part is the moment I met him (he was dating a friend) I cannot even describe the overwhelming security and certainty I felt. I wonder if he felt it too (though I doubt he would admit) because he asked me to marry him only 4 months later and neither of us had ever had a serious relationship prior. Another weird fact is when I was younger I always had dreams about the person I would fall in love with, but was never able to see their face. After We met I still had the dreams, but they all had the same face....his. The logic of the way I was raised says past life's are not possible, but I have always felt I had a secret other didn't understand.

Fascinating, thank you for sharing. I googled this because I recently had a very real-seeming dream of being an 18th century London prostitute. All the clothing was very period, accents were very low-class British, and I was worried about Jack the Ripper. That's all, then I woke up. But it felt very different than an ordinary dream.

Lianimal 23 months ago

Oops, I meant 1800s, not 18th century.

Fantastic Hub. What about future life dreams - do you think the same applies?

I'm curious, did you ever find the asylum's location? It seems like an asylum surrounded by the sea utilizing an old castle shouldn't be that hard to track down. I gave it a cursory search, but of course didn't find anything in half an hour of looking. I remember my own past life, and have actually tracked down my name, so I know it's possible. Keep trying!

Starjarus 17 months ago

I have been having dreams of standing by a cliff looking out to sea, dressed all in white I think, and very sad too, thanks to google earth I discovered it was the island Cyprus. I also had other recurring dreams of being in a later period where I was a little girl surrounded by which I later discovered were Commedia dell'Arte in Venice, I remembered the mask they wore and the colors purple and gold.

Thank you for the opportunity to share.

I have had a dream....very often in the last 6 years. Since I met my current boyfriend. We are having a rocky relationship now...and I don't know if it was foretold to me by my dream.

I dream that I am a woman....pretty....fiesty...in the later 1800's. My boyfriend is my boyfriend in the dream....we were to get married in the dream. He is the sheriff of the town we are living in. I can smell the dirt see the colors of the buildings and the clothes. Feel my hand as I rub it against my horse that is at the hitching post in front of the sheriff's office. I go into the office and he is not there. I hear yelling and sounds like a fight going on around the back of the buildings. When I run around I see the sheriff (my boyfriend) standing there with a man pointing a rifle at him from about 20 feet away. I yell his name and he turns to look at me...at that time a shot rings out and he is shot. I run to him and lay his head in my lap and he looks up at me and says he always loved me...then he dies. I look up into the sky as I scream ''Noooooo" then hold him close to me rocking back and forth....the pain so deep I feel as if I will die myself.

That is when I wake up. It feels so real....like I was really there....like it really happened. It really shakes me up for days after the dream. It is usually about 2-3 months between dreams.

Thanks for this hub.Just what I was looking for.Last night I had what I thought was a past life dream for the first time in my life. I recognized it as such immediately based on the criteria that I instinctively felt upon awakening, and which I now read here, as being hallmarks of such dreams. However, I wanted to share in the hope that if I'm mistaken, someone will read it here and tell me so.

For the first time in my life, I am not myself in my dream. I am consciously someone else although no one calls me by my name. I have a constant companion however and his name is Eddie. From his attire and his hairstyle(he has long blonde hair and a blonde mustache) and blue jeans tops and bottoms that I can still see clearly in my mind, it is clear to me that he is a hippie. Although it is not spoken between us, it is understood that we are both hippies and I have a deep feeling that we are both war veterans. I am guessing from the vietnam war era.

In the dream, we travel by foot through the city of New Orleans. I have visited the city only once in my life and did not particularly enjoy it, so I have no affinity or knowledge of it. Yet, in the dream, I show Eddie around the city and point out many, many distinct buildings and areas that I explain to him as being significant to me in my childhood. Specific houses, train stops, bus depots and warehouses are all visited. He asks me at one point which part of the city I come from, I distinctly say 3rd district. I have no idea if such a district even exists or if it doesn't, whether this disqualifies my dream as a true past life experience. I need to check.

Eddie and I in sequence, with no muddling of time or space, visit cafes, listen to bands, meet girls and drink beers. He tells me about his upbringing in Atlanta.Again, I have no knowledge of the city but he tells me vividly of his neighborhood and his memories of childhood. Much is unspoken, but on a subconscious level, it is clear to me that he and I share scars from a shared experience. This is brought home even further at the end of the dream when we board a yellow school bus with other people. The number 863 is clearly visible to me above th rear licence plate. The people, male and female, their features are unclear to me but I know they are of both sexes, part of a group that I belong to,, and my gut feeling as the bus departs with us in it, is that we share some sort of treatment. Perhaps addiction. I have never been addicted to anything in my life. I wake up from my dream while travel continues on the bus. This dream is the most powerful one I have ever had and thank you for letting me share it here. Any comments would be welcome.

I've had a recurring dream where I am walking through a field; I cannot see myself as I'm looking out through my own eyes. I can only see my dress as my legs move to walk through the high grass. In the distance I see a soldier in red and white with black high boots. He is kneeling on one knee and looking out into the distance. He is attractive with shoulder length brown hair and dark eyes. He has been at war. He is waiting for me. As I get closer he looks at me and smiles. Stands and begins walking my way. He is my love. My soul. Before we can reach each other, I wake up. I used to have this dream quite often and it was so frustrating. I believe I've met this man. We went to his hometown so I could meet his mother recently and walked her property of quite a few acres. As we walked in that field, I knew it was the very field and same soldier I had dreamt about and I felt unbelievably 'complete'. It was the most amazing feeling.

Re incarnation is a lie straight from the pit of Hell.

The bible clearly says that man is appointed once to die and then the Judgment . I make no apologies in saying that these types of dreams are the results of demonic influence that anyone in a fallen world such as ours could be open to. This is designed to lead sincere genuine people further away from the love truth and Lordship of Jesus Christ

Joshua 3 weeks ago

I believe in this as well. Me, I love to swordfight and I am very good at it, yet I have never had any training at all. It just comes naturally to me. But I have had dreams before of participating in ancient battles and it is always as the same person. However, in one battle I finally get killed, by an arrow to the eye. But I have had these dreams several times over my lifetime as well as others. And before anyone criticizes me, yes I am a Christian, and believe in Jesus, but you can't deny what you see all the time. Sometimes they are tricks yes. But who is to say, that reincarnation is not God's way of teaching us and trying to give us another chance? I mean it states that God can not allow sinners into Heaven. This may be his way of giving us another chance to learn and fix what we have done in our lives. God is forgiving and patient. So I find this easy to believe.

hi

I believe in past life incarnation since it is one of the beliefs inherent in Hinduism and the karmic principle.Few months back, I had a very vivid early morning dream where I saw my family , parents and sister in a very different time.We looked European but I immediately knew all of them.My father worked as a technician in the docks/or on a ship. We weren't well to do and lived near the sea. We were all getting ready to travel by ship. I recollect seeing my father dressed in overalls and mother in a dress and a funny cap having a conversation on this ship. When i woke up, I had this feeling that the ship had sunk. I knew the name of the ship -'Lusitania'.this dream was incredibly detailed and felt matter of fact.By the way, my dad has spent 25 years with the Indian Navy. The dream explains his connection with the Navy.

@Sneha - What an interesting dream! Did you know that the Lusitania was a real British-made cruise ship in (I think) World War I? Do a Google search for it and you'll be able to learn more. It sank in 1915 after being hit by a torpedo.

In the dream, was your family getting on the ship with your father, or just saying goodbye to him?
