Like their Native American counterparts did with tribal tattoos, Scottish and Irish warriors also defined their rank or commemorated a particular battle by tattooing permanent marks onto their skin. As far back as the 1600's Scots were using tattoos as identifiers in times of war. As warriors of old evolved into military men and firefighters of now, Scottish tattoos took on a new form. A firefighter, for example, will not get a tattoo until the day of his retirement, at which point he will ink a Lifetime of Service memorial on his arm, often symbolized by flames or a fireman's helmet. Another type of Scottish tattoo is the Fallen Fighter memorial tattoo, which honors a friend or family member who died in the line of duty. If his or her occupation was that of a firefighter, the tattoo will often have the person's name, date of birth, date of death and ladder number.

But perhaps the most popular tattoo of Irish/Scottish descent is the Scottish clan tattoo that has emerged over the past 20 years or so. Scottish clan tattoos are family crests of Scottish families that typically include the "swatch" or plaid design. Each of the 13 regions in Scotland have their own crest along with their own plaid, so tattooing a particular design explains where an individual's family hails from.

Gaelic is the language that is spoken by Irish and Scottish people, with differences in usage, accent and pronunciation depending on which country you are in. There are a number of different dialects spoken within various areas of the country as well. The three main Irish dialects can be found in the provinces of Munster, Connacht and Ulster, with the newest (but rarely recorded) dialect appearing in Dublin and spoken amongst the younger generations. The Scottish Gaelic language (a branch of Celtic) is the main language spoken in Scotland today and dates back as early as the 5th or 6th century. There are a number of English names that can be directly translated to Gaelic. Ailean is Alan, Donnchadh is Duncan, Coinneach is Kenneth; Iain is John, Uilleam is William, Catriona is Catherine, Mairi is Mary, Seumas is James and Padraig is Patrick. Other names, however, have no direct equivalent, so if you're interested in getting your name tattooed in Gaelic you will have to settle for the closest translation.

As with any tattoo that is done in a foreign language not your own, make sure you do your homework. Double check your translation with several sources. A native speaker is your best bet, someone who speaks Gaelic as their first language, English as their second. If a native speaker is not available to you, your next best bet is a Gaelic scholar who has studied the language extensively. Last but not least, there are several online translators who offer their services for free. Although they can be very useful, keep in mind that it is important to ensure your translation is correct by either using several different online translators or confirming it's accuracy with native speakers on a Gaelic forum or message board.

Here are some Gaelic phrases to get your creative juices flowing:

Is fhearr fheuchainn na bhith san duil -- It's better to try than to hope

An uair as laine 'n cupan, 's ann as dorr' a ghiulan -- When the cup is fullest it is most difficult to carry

B' i sin reul 's an oidhche dhoilleir -- That were a star on a dark night

Níl aon leigheas ar an ngrá ach pósadh -- The only cure for love is marriage

Gra, Dilseacht, Cairdeas -- love, loyalty, friendship

Cha d'dhùin doras nach d'fhosgail doras -- No door ever closed, but another opened

Eiridh tonn air uisge balbh -- A wave will rise on quiet water

Fear gu aois, is bean gu bàs -- A son is a son until he comes of age; a daughter is a daughter all her life

An rud is annamh is íontach -- What is seldom is wonderful

Ceileann searc ainimh 's locht -- Love is blind

Tada gan iarracht -- Nothing without effort

GAELIC TATTOOS

"Family"
"Father until we meet again may God hold you in the hallow of His hand"
"Friendship, loyalty, love"
"Live, love, laugh"
"rage"
"Scotland forever"
"The girl made lovely by sorrow"
"Truth" and "Strength"
"You are half of me"

Derek  4 years ago

Karyn, Aidan is spelt Aodhan, with an accent over the A, as for Carson and Bryce there is no translation. The following letters don't exist is the Irish alphabet, k, j, q, v,w,x,y,z. A probable translation for Carson could be Cormac...but don't get that tattoo'd on yourself and blame me if its wrong.

A clann tattoo is what I am considering getting right now along with my two older brothers. Two of my friends (one Scottish, one Irish descent) have theirs and they look fantastic and truly mean something. This is a great and informative article; I didn't know the history of Celtic tattoos until now.

How do you say Bull in gaelic? Or what I really want is "The Bull".

Annoyed 3 years ago

I don't think this is a place for langauge translations- ESPECIALLY tattoo translations. Are you guys for real? If you really want a tatto translation in a language YOU DON'T EVEN SPEAK then maybe you should get and get a book and do some research on you own stead of frittering away your time on the internet, expecting others to do the work for you.

Lynsey 3 years ago

I just wanted to say that it's extremely misleading to use phrases like "the gaelic language" and to describe all the pictures above as simply "gaelic phrases" and "gaelic tattoos".

Irish and Scottish Gaelic are not simply two dialects of one language; they divided in the 17th century and are part of the same family of Celtic languages but are two completely distinct languages. Making no distinction between Irish tattoos and Scottish Gaelic tattoos will only create confusion.

I am also confused about your statement that "Scottish Gaelic is the main language spoken in Scotland today" which, if you're referring to Scottish Gaelic in comparison to English, is just plain wrong. And if you're referring to it in comparison to Irish, then you're also wrong as the Gaelic they speak in Ireland (which Irish people will usually just refer to as Irish) is not a native language of Scotland and will only be spoken by Irish immigrants and students of Celtic languages.

Louise 3 years ago

Emma says:4 days ago

Is the "Friendship, Loyalty and Love" one Irish gaelic or Scottish?

It is in Irish for sure. I speak that language you guys call 'Gaelic'. We call it Irish, or gaeilge. Anyways, it's cool that people get our language tattoed on themselves. It's cool that people even knows it exists since most (not all) people in Ireland have English as their first language and Irish as a secong language.

I too am thinking of having some words inked on me, in Irish obviously. Hmm, needs some more thinking about...

Does anyone know "unconquerable faith" and "honor and loyalty" in scottish gaelic? Would be a great help! Thanks

Ceitidh Mhorag 3 years ago

I would just like to point out that yes infact the majority of scottish people do not speak Gaelic, but as for saying that 99% of scottish people dont, is a huge generalisation. I understand you are just pointing out the fact that it is not the main language of our country but in the 2001 census the statistics were 58,652 gaelic speaker in scotland. And i am certain the figure is rising. I am from the Highlands and Islands, and am in my last year of High School learning Advance Higher Gaelic course. And can assure you there are many, many learners.

Also please distinguish the difference between Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic...

Tha mi uabhasach duillich, just needed to get that off my chest.

As for translations, i'll try my best although i cant promice it will be 100% accurate.

Tapadh leibh a'cairdean

Adrian 3 years ago

Just to let shaun know that if he really is trying to look for a translation of his name into Irish then he is a twat.

So are most of the rest of you. You can only translate indivual words or full sentences most of the time.

The most likely to get a proper translation would be the person requesting "play beautiful." Well as it is not gramatticly correct to start with then there is no need to make it grammatticly correct after translation.

By the way mister Moore I am pretty sure the translation of Mor(fada on the o) for your name is incorrect. It is the irish word for big and I know it has been used but think that its origins are completely different.

Now on a personal note can anybody tell me why they would get a tattoo of something that means nothing to them. Surely if your celtic heritage meant that much to you you would have already learnt how to speak the language enough to translate things like family, loyalty, friendship or even maybe how to conjugate a verb as simple as foghlaim(to learn).

I personally can't understand the shallowness of somepeople in their eagerness to belong to something they don't.

Ùisdean 3 years ago

Seadh Gary,

Tha e ceart [It is correct]

Alba gu brath = Scotland forever

Saor Alba = Free Scotland

Saorsa no Bàs = Freedom or Death

Ceartas = Justice [in Scottish Gàidhlig]

A note to everybody, not all names translate into Irish or Scottish Gaeilge/Gàidhlig

A name like John in Scottish Gàidhlig is Iain and in Irish it can be Sean but if you have a name like Marco, Samuel, Beth, Ruth, etc forget there ever being a translation because those names come from other parts of the world. The only way you'll ever have a Scottish or Irish name would be if you were willing to give up your current name and choose a new one or for those having children, use Celtic names. They are beautiful.

jujugoes 3 years ago

adrian, don't be such an asshole! it is you who are the twat. do you have any idea how many ppl, esp. here in america, have irish ancestry? perhaps we did not have the privilege of being born in eire, but we sure as hell have the blood heritage as much as you! were we born and raised there, we would maybe have gaeilge--although, many of those born outside of the gaeltacht regions don't know it any better than we do! so stuff your arrogant, holier-than-thou attitude and go fuck yourself, why don't ya? now i'm off to find some phrases in sanskrit--and i don't have a feckin DROP of Indian blood in me, oh me, oh my!

irish guy 3 years ago

'is leath diom thu' with an accent or 'fada' on the i in diom and the u in thu is the way i would translate you are half of me

or 'is leath diom sibh' again with a fada on the i in diom is the translation for you (more than one person) are half of me.

with irish theres obviously lots of ways to say things but its hard to translate things directly. with names also its not as if theres irish versions of every name out there.

other things may change us but we start and end with the family - for this id say 'b'fheidir go nathrionn rudai eile ach tosaimid is criochnaimid leis an gclann' theres a couple of fadas and stuff on this but just reply if you want me to tell you where they are!

i dont think the take your time, hurry up thing would come across the same way in irish! you could say 'na dean deifir ach brostaigh ort' but i think its a little more self contradictory than your looking for!

for wat doesnt kill me makes me stronger you could say ' deanann an rud nach maraionn me duine nios laidre asam '

NB DISCLAIMER!! these are all just how id say them and they could very well be incorrect so double and triple check dont just trust some random guy on the net!! theres also a few fadas needed to be put in put as i said if you wanna just reply and i can specify if ppl are interested!

irish guy  3 years ago

sorry dont really know wat i was thinkin for the last one it sounded right in my head i think itd be better to say mura maraionn se me deanann se duine nios laidre asam! im findin this one hard! my irish isnt as good as it used to be!

i would double checkany transltions you get on this website as some of them are incorrect (not mine).adrian and jujugoeni agree that adrian was being in solent but there was no need to go ape-shit.jujugoen according to the latest census there were nearly half a million irish speakers in irelandand that figure is steadily rising.you cannot say that they are all from the gaeltachts as the gaeltachts are mostly remote regions that receive an influx of tourists during the summer.a prime example of this is me.im not from a gaeltacht

You know it's only you Americans who get Gaelic tattoos? Actual Scottish people RARELY do that...that's like your sort of hill-billy antiquated language to us. The Education Act of 1872 prohibited people from speaking Gaelic, so now it's really an American romantic thing in all honesty.

However, in Ireland they might still adore Gaelic; I can't speak for them

Hi,

My husband is looking for a tattoo and he wants one in Gaelic.

Can someone please translate this sentence?

"He who raises, is the father"

Thanks in advance :)

Old Man Rant 23 months ago

Try learning the language. You are exploiting it not embracing it. People like you make me so angry. Same for people who get Latin, Arabic or Chinese tattooed apon their person, how do you actually know what you asked for is what you got?

Mandy 22 months ago

You're right about that we won't be certain of the right translation we might be getting, but i'm sure, and i will be speaking for myself in this matter, that if we find some translation we'll be working further on that.

But who are you to judge that we're exploiting it and not embracing it.

I'm sure all of us who'd like to be helped on this site, all have personal reasons to get translations. You're entiteled to have your opinion but don't judge if you don't know why someone would want it.

And if you're getting angry by reading all this, you shouldn't be looking at a thread like this. Wich is called Tattoo Ideas: Gaelic Words + Phrases btw.

Hey to anyone thats simply looking for a word in Irish, which is called Gaeilge by the way gaelic is a type of football in Ireland. go to www.focal.ie and type in the word u want and it'll translate it and its legit becuase we use t in college for Irish. Also if your looking for phrases in Irish it's usually easier to fin them in irish if you google "seanfhocail" as this means proverb in Irish and will bring them up in Irish. It'll usually only give you the main general ones though, but theres a lot to choose from.. :) hope this helps..

Cairstie 22 months ago

Hamish is Scots Gaelic for James, is it not? Seamus (with a wee accent above the 'e') is the Irish translation.

Paulie 22 months ago

This thread is unbelivable, the ammount of people looking for ridiciolious things translated to a language that they don't even understand. Irish is the native language of Ireland, celtic is the native language of Scotland, any surname with Mc at the begining would usally be of scottish herritage and would destroy your family name to translate it into something it is not! The other confusion lies within the translation of the word Irish into irish which would be Gaeilge. Most modern day names do not translate into Irish, others such as Sean (usually with a fada on the e) is the Irish name for John, my own name Paul translates to Pol with a fada on the o. Cairstie above me has already pointed out Seamus=james!! some names are spelt the same as in english but just with a fada over a vowel!!

My tat reads "A Leithéid de Saol"

I know exactly what it means but I aint tellin!!

Paulie 22 months ago

Your's is too easy mate, 3 simple words forwards and backwards you're just too lazy to look for it, I'll write it here, but your prob that lazy you won't even look back on here!

no fadas nothin!

I am not looking for something to tattoo, but something to name the home we just purchased. It is 6 bedrooms on a lake and we are hoping that are 4 grown children and our grand children will gather there, as we did at my Grans. She was born Margret Donahue in 1900 county Clare and emigrated to Canada at 9 years old. To honor her and the family values she instilled I would like to name my home in her native tongue. I remember hearing her sing as I lay down to sleep as a child and the magical quality to her words. I would also appreciate the correct pronunciation, phonetically so I say it correctly. Any ideas you may have would be appreciated. send to ninagsears@gmail.com

"Im in love with what we are, not what we should be"

any helpppppp would be greatly appreciated, i know some of them won't make sense when they're translated because they won't be gramatically correct.

I am looking into getting a tattoo that says:

"beautiful girl"

OR

"beautiful"

Can someone translate both for me?

I would very much appreciate it, thanks [:

Cailean 20 months ago

So many of these names originate from a different language, and so don't have direct translation.

Also, why get a Gaelic tatoo, if you don't know Gaelic, especially if you are of English descent, as your ancestors would have been responsible for Gaelic's slow death.

Jess 20 months ago

Maybe they want the tattoo because they want to embrace what once has been lost. And if you have been reading other posts, some people are studying the language but want to confirm it. Why do you have to be such a downer?

hello

could you kindly provide the correct translation for the word 'think' to irish gaelic please?

thank you

Rebecca 18 months ago

Hey everyone, I'm Irish (language is a bit rusty) but I'd be happy to help.

Sidney, 'téann saol ar aghaidh' / 'imíonn saol ar aghaidh'

Eli, 'think' can be 'ceap' / 'machnaigh' / 'smaoinigh', depending on what verb you want (all are in the infinitive)

Lauren, usually it's difficult to directly translate sayings. Irish is a complicated language and is mostly backwards. My advice would be to search 'seanfhocals' (proverbs). You might find something there.

Nikki, 'love hurts' can be written as 'gortaítear grá'

How do you spell the Gaelic word pronounced "Sigh-bull-gaily"? It's the word one would use when you forget what to say next. I've never been able to find anyone who can spell it? My Grandfather, mother and aunts, all use the word but they say it's a slang word and not found in the dictionary. Does anyone know? I think it'd make a great tattoo or the name for a horse!

allison 7 months ago

to the writer of this article: you need a serious history flash: It is well known by scholars and historians that the celts tattooed and painted their bodies with woad paint as early as the time of Christ and the Picts before them. Why does everyone and everything have to be compared to the native americans? how can so many people be so ignorant about their heritage?

Been researching translations for mother, sister, daughter and friend in Scottish Gaelic and have found mathair, piuthar, nighean, caraid. Can someone confirm this is correct? Also interested in what "protect and serve" would be as well. I've been looking at older posts and have found some good resources...thanks for the suggestions. E-mail me ddbrowning@charter.net. Thanks much!
