Italian tattoos come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The Italian cross, the Italian horn, the green, white and red Italian flag (including a number of variations of it, like the flag condensed in an outline of Italy or in an outline of stars). I've even seen a partially completed sleeve dedicated solely to Italian food; it features a plate of macaroni and meatballs, a jug of wine and a cannoli. Luckily, unlike Latin (which is an extinct language), Hebrew and Arabic (which are very complex languages that use specific character sets in lieu of letters, requiring an exact knowledge of calligraphy) or Gaelic (which has numerous different dialects), Italian is a fairly easy language to translate.
Most words that exist in English can be translated into Italian without much difficulty. As with the English language, however, be extra careful to make sure you get the Italian spelling correct. Reverse two letters and your beautiful, inspirational tat becomes nonsensical. I once saw an episode of "Miami Ink" on the TLC channel where the customer wanted "per sempre" tattooed on his arm, which is Italian for "forever". It wasn't the tattoo artists fault, because the customer had designed the lettering for the tat himself, but when it was finished it read "pre sempre" instead. It's only one letter off but this unfortunately means nothing in Italian.
Exercise caution when it comes to the popular Italian phrase "life is beautiful" which many people, including Lindsay Lohan, have been getting recently. "La vita e bella" is the correct translation, and even though it uses the same words, some people have been getting "la bella vita" which actually translates to "the beautiful life", and is used in Italy to describe someone who is living a life of wealth, throwing parties and spending extravagant amounts of money.
As with any tattoo that is done in a foreign language not your own, make sure you do your homework. Double check your translation with several sources. A native speaker is your best bet, someone who speaks Italian as their first language, English as their second, or vice versa. If a native speaker is not available to you, your next best bet is a Italian scholar who has studied the language extensively. Last but not least, there are several online translators who offer their services for free. Although they can be very useful, keep in mind that it is important to ensure your translation is correct by either using several different online translators or confirming it's accuracy with native speakers on an Italian forum or message board.

also an italian....ppl gotta realize there are differnt dialects across italy...every province has variations, can even differ from city to city....
its easier to look at italian sayings and go from there, anytime you try to take a english saying and translate it to italian there is potential for trouble...some things in english dont tranlsate directly, or have no meaning together in italian...
so my advice would be research some italian sayings, and their respected english translation....and perhaps you will find something more authentic italian that both makes sense and is gramatically correct

i really hope you all think about what you are doing before you go through with this. i came across this site looking for a tattoo design, and not only can people not write well in italian, but they can hardly write well in english. let me tell you something: you think coming up with some cute catchy phrase in english and turning it into italian makes it authentic. you HAVE to remember (and i know it may be hard for those of you who have never studied another language extensively) that even if a translation is PERFECT with word for word phrases, it would still make no sense to an italian.
also, i beg of you not to trust anyone on this site. not even me, and I live in Sardegna, have lived in Siena, and translate italian-to-english texts for a living. people here are transtlating things incorrectly, taking otherwise good translations and butchering them because they didn't match the phrase word for word in english, and even speaking of grammar completely incorrectly. anyone who tells you that ALL adjectives come after the noun should not be trusted. because, even though many adjectives do in fact follow the noun (la lingua e' difficile), there are still plenty of cases where the adjective precedes the noun. words like bello, vecchio, giovane, brutto, stesso, lungo, grande all come BEFORE the noun.
also, there are a million small mistakes posted here. for example, the translation of beautiful soul is what someone said: bella anima. however, they failed to mention that feminine nouns that begin with a vowel contract with preceding adjectives/articles/etc. so bella anima is actually bell'anima.
in conclusion, not only should you not trust random people on the internet who know a few words in italian and own a dictionary and therefore think that they are capable of translations (not to mention translations with two extremely difficult, complex, and dissimilar languages), but also you shouldn't just choose something "cute" in english and turn it into italian. that does not make it italian. it make it english written in italian. instead, try to find something with some real substance...something that exists in italian... because this is the real problem: if you want to translate the old italian "A chi dai il dito si prende anche un braccio" you get "To whom you a give a finger will also take an arm." that is a fine translation, but to us, it makes no sense. you would need to further render that into "Give them an inch and they'll take a mile." that is a good example of how you can't just turn one language into another. so stop taking advice from random know-nothings or know-some-but-not-enoughs. besides, "io so' io e voi nun siete un cazzo!"
Okay reading the last guy's comment-I agree, I would like an italian phrase that would be appropriate for this situation. My daughter's name is Rowan and I would like her name tatooed on my side with a phrase below it. Something equating to the fact that she is my ultimate love and reason for being. Not to mention I did not think that I could have children, desperately wanted one, and so she is like my miracle?????

Matto means crazy and Bello means beautiful. "Life is too beautiful to take for granted" = "La vita è troppo bella per darla per scontata" literally, but the repetition of "per" does not sound really great... better "la vita è troppo bella per crederla dovuta", which is literally "life is too beautiful to think it's granted". Crysta, you posted that "la bella vita" should be "la vita bella." You are wrong. Not all adjectives in italian follow the noun. Adjectives talking about beauty, age, number, goodness, or size are all adjectives that precede the noun.

id x, 'i will love you forever' in Italian is "Ti amero' per sempre". "you're always in my heart" is "Sei sempre nel mio cuore" and "you'll always be in my heart" is "Sarai sempre nel mio cuore", depending if you want to use the present tense or the future tense. Ciao.
Nikki, "Everything happens for a reason" is "tutto succede per una ragione". It's correct and a very true statement. A similar alternative could be: "There's a reason for everything" (C'e' una ragione per tutto). A native Italian like me would probably tattoo the second one since it's shorter and easier. Nicholas, you can't be literal. It won't make any sense. For "In Loving Memory" and "Never Forgotten" I would say "In memoria di..........Non ti dimentichero' mai" (In memory of........I'll never forget you". I hope this help. Ciao

Someone wrote that it should be La vita bella because in Italian the adj. goes after then noun, and they're correct. HOWEVER, La bella vita is MUCH more common in the spoken language and sounds better. If you tattoo La vita e' bella...make sure that you put the accent over the "e" because if you don't it'll read "life and pretty" because the "e" without the accent means "and" in Italian. I'm fluent in Italian and can tell you that many times people have translated things incorrectly on this site, so BE CAREFUL....I would ask the advice of someone that speaks Italian as their FIRST language not just someone that took Italian in high school or college!

I actually study italian myself, but I'm ot confident enough in my ability to speak/write to use for a tatoo! Hi, just read that last comment and I totally agree with your point- If it means something to you then thats exactly the reason TO get tattooed- although if the language means nothing to you then maybe the tattoo should be in english so people can read it correctly? Otherwise it just seems to be a bit of a fashion statement and distorts the meaning? Does that make sense or am I reading too much into it?

I have only studied Italian for 2 1/2 years but I noticed sooo many misspellings in the photos. If you're going to get a tattoo in a language you don't speak, ask yourself why you want it, because you can't fix it usually. On an episode of LA Ink, a guy wanted an Italian phrase containing the word "family" in it; no one on the show noticed, but the word was spelled the Spanish way, not the Italian way. If you want to reflect your heritage, do it with symbols, images, or things that actually mean something to you rather than misspelled words in a language you don't know.
Anyway I'm not a native speaker but here's the help I can provide:
@ktcakes: Crazy/beautiful is just the title of a film, so as far as it "existing" in Italian, I can't say it really does, but anyway. The word for crazy is pazzo (pazza is the feminine) and bello (bella is the feminine) means beautiful. I am guessing you are a lady so it would be "pazza bella," I suppose.
@Caz: One life="una vita"; live it is the imperative, like a command, so the translation would be"la vivi" or "la viva" for the formal. I think it would look better to say "una vita; vivi" without the la, which technically means "one life; live." Just my opinion. "Live and let live" is a rather English-oriented phrase; I think the translation would be "Vive e permetti vivere" but I am not sure.
@Ande: Use "fiera;" it's a more attractive word to say and read. "Orgoglioso" means the same thing EXCEPT it's masculine. If you want to use that word, use "orgogliosa."
@lyssa & kayla: "Love never fails" can be "l'amore non fallisce." Alternatively, "l'amore riesce" is "love succeeds." "She flies on her own wings" is, I think, "Lei vola sulle ali proprie" (minus the "lei" it means more or less the same thing; lei just indicates a female subject).
@Ryan C.: "Gli amici vengono e vanno, ma la famiglia e' per sempre." The e' is an e with a grave (accent going down from left to right). I have no idea what the translation you have means.
@mim: There is an excellent Italian book/movie called "Io non ho paura" meaning "I have no fear" or "I am not scared."
A really excellent Italian dictionary online is www.garzantilinguistica.it. You need to sign up but it's free and there are verb tables, etc. It is written from an Italian point of view rather than an English one so it is more precise.

Hey so again everyone if you are not sureee and are asking random people what things mean in italian you migghht just not know enough to trust people, again different dialects from each place to me all or most of those are wrong because sicily has a different dialect, and might mean the same for your familys heritage i am getting a tattoo allsooo but my whole family speaks it, and i trust them much more then people who are or may be using translators that are mostly wrong and write things crazyy =) but im just warning everyone its a big step and can take it back so think before your reading things thinking its not on your body forever, talk to a person who speaks italian fluently not a translator it will work much better and beleive me if you all have the italian heritage someone in your family sshallll speak it well enough!

embrace your dream = well..."embrace" literally is "abbraccia" but "abbraccia i tuoi sogni" doesn't make any sense, it could be "insegui i tuoi sogni " that's "follow your dreams".
follow your heart = is "segui il tuo cuore" ("insegui" is used when you have to achieve something...i don't know how to explain....example, in a rece, the second whant to catch the first one, right? well what he is doing is "inseguire". we use "segui" when you have to follow something, example "follow me" is "seguimi")
cherish your life = i really don't know how to translate this...
while i brathe, i hope = "mentre respiro, spero" but it doesn't sound so good in italian...

that's right, we have a lot of dialects and it depends on where you live, but the italian lenguage is one.
I mean, the different dialects are different ways to speak, not differents ways to write. for example If you listen to televistion, they speak normal italian.
Yes i know but have you noticed that there all using translators and its like almost worse than when schools try to teach italian it just sounds wrong, and yes ive listend to the tv and they speak italian but if people want it as there heritage id go with family, like my family wants me to do my tattoo in a different dialect because we are not from northern italy at all and there dialect is very much differnt. and to EVERYONE dont use translators..there no trustworthy, italian speaking people will help way more.. hahaha

I am beautiful translates to "Sono bella or "Io sono bella". Either way works, but "Io sono bella" is more of a declarative statement.
"Love rules without rules" literally translates to "L'amore domina senza regole" but it doesn't sound as nice as its English counterpart.

if i wanted to get beautiful disaster how would that translate...i've researched and found so many different opinions...the research i've done i've come up with bella and then disastro for beautiful and disaster, but i've also come across another form of disaster...frana - i know it means landslide and such but an alternative definition i've found in several places say that it also means disaster (to be hopeless at)....if i got bella on my right wrist and then frana on my left wrist what would that really mean?

I wanted to know if there was a proverb in Italian that was close to this. I don't want a translation unless a fluent Italian speaker can translate it to make sense because if you use translaters online they give you the phrase "O troverò un modo o farò uno" which when you translate back means "Or find a way or I'll do one" which makes no sense at all. So I just want a similar proverb or a perfect translation. If anyone could help me that would be great :)

"Ready for anything" is easier and it can be translated with "Pronto a tutto"
By the way I don't know if Shelby is a male or female name, so I assumed male; in case you're a girl the second sentence becomes "Pronta a tutto" (the first one instead doesn't change)
I also do not agree with Martina's translation of "We are not the ones to judge": my doubt is mainly based on the function of "the ones".
What does it refer to?
If the sentence has the same meaning as "Nobody should judge us" then the translation is totally wrong and instead should be: "non siamo noi quelli da giudicare"
If, instead, "we are not the ones to judge" is similar to "we should not judge others", the translation is "non sta a noi giudicare"
What Martina wrote ("non siamo gli unici a giudicare") means "we're not the only ones who judge"
Uhm seems like there is one more mistakes:
"Fly beautiful butterfly" is "Vola bella farfalla" and not just "bella farfalla"
I also saw more unresponded requests:
"Beauty, strenght, love" is "Bellezza, forza, amore"
"either we will find a way or make one" really gave me some troubles but also a lot of fun. I had to recall my latin memories (only after understanding that Hannibal isn't Hannibal Lecter as I first supposed LOL).
Anyway the PERFECT translation is "Troverò una strada o ne aprirò una nuova" and I don't remember any proverb even just similar to this.
But I warn you: the translations says "strada" which is what Annibale meant and it translates "way" as if it is "route". So that is the correct one. BUT if you instead thought that "way" was used like "different ways to do something" then it should be translated with "modo", but the sentence, while still making sense, loses connection with what a true italian would say. You could instead use "troverò un modo o me ne inventerò uno nuovo"

"Niente scuse" or "Nessuna scusa" but both are meant in italian as "No excuses". Unfortunately "Excuses" and "Apologies" are both translated the same in italian.

I disagree: The "ne" is necessary. We are talking about written - and NOT spoken - language. In written language you can't omit pronouns.
Also "non siamo noi a giudicare" can be translated with "we are not the ones THAT judge". I'm not sure if it is correct, that's why I asked for the meaning of the sentence. To translate correctly one needs to understand the context in which the sentence is used.

BUT the quote should be "He who is NOT impatient is not in love" and in that case --> "Chi non è impaziente non è innamorato"
By the way, "He who" litteral translation is "Colui che", but simply "Chi" ("Who") sounds much more common in italian: "colui che" is a bit old fashioned

"capo di capo" --> no sense (lit. boss of boss)
"capo dei capo" --> even less sense, untranslatable.
The fact is that "of" in italian is "di" but we also decline it so if it is "of the + singular, masculine" it becomes "del", "of the + singular, feminine" --> "della" and so on...

Jojocandi, as I told you, I don't properly get the meaning of "true to myself". I can guess something, but wouldn't like to say anything wrong; so I'll skip the first one until someone tells me the correct meaning.
As for the other sentences:
"Being myself is beautiful" --> lit. "Essere me stesso è bello", but a better (closer to real spoken language) way is "è bello essere me stesso"
"Per me la verità è bellissima" --> "Truth is really beautiful to me"

That is obviously a sentence that requires an extensive explanation because it can be translated in italian, but it doesn't make much sense (I mean that it is an expression not used in our language).
So, if you want the litteral translation, it's "Solo un'altra nave persa in mare". If, instead, you want a similar (but commonly known and used) expression in italian, you will have to explain the meaning..

The song is referring to a man looking for the love of his life. So he's saying without her he's a ship lost at sea. As in he doesn't have a home to return to without a woman there.

Yes, it does. But it's really hard to adapt that to italian (translating is easy).
You see, I thought it was an expression commonly used but, as it is a song lyric, I think of it as a verse from poetry.
Therefore, if I adapt it, it will probably lose its "poetic flavour".
You can stick with the litteral translation IMHO, because it is a correct sentence that makes perfect sense (again, I discarded it because I thought you were looking for common language).
Maybe add a coma --> "Solo un'altra nave, persa in mare" because it splits the sentence in two different images: first a boat, confused between many others and then the same boat, alone in the middle of the sea, wandering lonely.
One last option: instead of "persa in mare", you could use "alla deriva", which means more or less the same. "Alla deriva" is taken directly from nautical language (it should be "drifting" in English, if I got it right) so it fits better, but to me it is less poetic.
Your choice then ;)

The same thing, "perduta" and "persa" are exact synonyms (both are the past participle "lost" of the verb "perdere" --> "to lose").
"Perduta" is less used and a bit more old fashioned. Again, your choice, choose the one that sounds better to you ;)

"strength comes from surviving the past"... it requires some heavy adaptation to make sense in italian.
You can use:
"Strenght comes from what we have stood in the past" --> "La forza viene da ciò che abbiamo sopportato in passato"
OR
"Strenght comes from what we have overcome in the past" --> "La forza viene da ciò che abbiamo superato in passato"
OR
This is the closest to the litteral translation, but not the fittest to the meaning IMHO: "Strenght comes from surviving the past" --> "La forza viene dal sopravvivere al passato". To add more sense to the sentence I'd say "La forza viene dal sopravvivere al proprio passato" --> "Strenght comes from surviving oneself's past". The problem with this last one is that it sounds the opposite of what I think you want to express, like you have done something terrible in the past and the regret could drive you crazy (like you killed someone...), so you find your strenght in surviving the regret...
"find strength in survival" --> lit. "Trova la forza nella sopravvivenza" BUT it doesn't make sense at all (grammatically it is correct, but still...). I would adapt to "Trova la forza in ciò che hai passato" --> "Find strenght in what you've passed/experienced"

first off it's "amore", not amor. that sentence translates to "love wins all".
l'amore sopra tutti makes more sense i guess, it means "love over everything"

Just a minor correction to the article. La bella vita is not incorrect. People who get it do mean for it to translate into the beautiful life, at least I would hope so. It is actually a prominent saying in Italian society, the saying alone embraces the way in which Italians embrace life and live life daily. They believe in the beautiful life, meaning that you always present yourself in the best possible manner. They hold in highest esteem the beauties in life, whether it be in fashion or food or art. La bella vita is truly the way of life in Italy, ask any Italian. Anyone who tattoos this on his or her body hopefully would know this.

i'm italian and I can't believe that so many people want a tattoo with an italian phrase.But it's really difficult to translate words or sentence in my language cause l'italiano è difficile.I read all the posts here and I found a lot of mistakes and I really really hope that nobody of you made a tattoo with something found here.However I'll give you a hint:

@for all : the life is beautiful, is a famous benigni movie and in italia is "LA VITA E' BELLA" only translated like this have sense or also "LA VITA E' MERAVIGLIOSA" (marvellous), changing the place of the words is a mistake cause "la bella vita " is without verb (è) and it means a kind of life that only rich people do (Lindsay Lohan didn't do wrong cause she's actually living a "bella vita" but I don't think she would like to mean that). I read that also Hayden Panettiere write something in Italian that is incorrect, but I don't remember.

Those sentences are stupid too! if you have to make a tattoo write: "La tua invidia è la mia forza" (Your envy is my strength) "A volte angelo altre diavolo" (at times angel other devil) or "Io voglio tutto ciò che non posso avere!" (I want all that I cannot have)... Italian's linguage is very difficult! I repeat those sentences are incorrect!

Crysta, "la bella vita" IS accurate. While you're correct that adjectives usually go after the noun in Italian, example: la ragazza bionda (for the blonde girl, for ex.)....when it comes to bel/bello/bella and buon/buono/buona (depending on masc/fem tense), it is an exception to that rule. I just had to share just in case people are reconsidering tattoos based on that advice. :)

@ Candy: the exact phrase is: "Bella anima"... Candy an Italian grammatical rule say that two vowels cannot be near, in this case A is an italian vowel and so "bellA Anima" it's wrong, "Bella" must be apostrophized.

Jessie, sempre isn't a slang word in Italian. It means always in Italian. However, the translation of your tattoo isn't correct. "Vivere sempre amici" translates to "To live always friends" (As others have mentioned with English-Italian translations, they don't always work). I speak Italian, and personally I think that you could turn that phrase into many things. For example, you could say that "Friendship Lives Forever", which would translate to "L'amicizia Vive Per Sempre". If you do choose to keep your original though, assuming it's almost like making a remark to someone, it would be "Viviate per sempre amici".

Your second translation is the most correct. The difference: Vivi comes from Vivere, which is the Italian verb meaning "To live". As with French and Spanish, Italian uses different forms of verbs to describe what I, you, he/she, we, you(plural), and they are doing. Obviously in the English language, we don't have this. Vivi is the you(singular) form of the verb,meaning you(sing.) live. Your second translation would work just fine, but you could also do "Vive la vita, Ama la vita" which would be the he/she form of vivere. However, this form is used when making a remark or a demand to someone in Italian (for example, when parents tell their picky eaters to eat, they say Mangia! with the "a" instead of Mangi! which would normally be the correct verb tense for you (singular). For anyone wanting to put "La vita è bella," (Life is Beautiful)please be aware that it is the title of a very well known Oscar-winning movie. Mind you, it's my favorite movie, but Italian speakers/within the Italian community they will probably think you are just a huge fan. lol.

Attention: do not use google translation. As an italian speaker, I have tried it out of curiosity and although it is good for translating individual words, it is awful in translating verbs because it often does not translate in the correct tense and therefore the sentences really make no sense.

No SMARTPERSON. Online translation is not accurate when it comes to putting words together. U can put them together in english but reading it in italian may not make sense. They also do not spell them correctly either. Example, family is not familia, its famiglia. So unless ur an italian that knows italian, ur going to have a hard time. I would suggest to not do anything too long. One or two words at the most.

Alright, I live with my Nonna. 78 year old, authentic Calabrese nonna. Lived with her my whole life, intereacted with her friends, all of whom are from various regions of Italy.
The Italian language varies greatly from region to region. Every region has their own dialect be it Calabrese, Abruzzese, Sicilian etc. Hell, sometimes towns in Italy have their own specific dialect (I discovered this after my nonna told me that her new doctor spoke "propio propio Valelongese" - the dialect of her town Vallelonga in Calabria).
Translations will vary based on this. My nonna speaks both Calabrian dialect and proper formal Italian, best bet is to find someone who is fluent in formal Italian.

First of all "voi" is proper and I did not think you wanted to use that. You have to understand that in Italian a straight translation does not work because an italin would not know what you mean by that. I translate so that Italians reading will understand what you are trying to say.

In Italian, "Sono forte" can of course mean "I am strong" in the physical sense, but most of times, expecially on a Tatt, it sounds like "I am cool". As to staying strong through what life throws at you, if you want to use a verb, there's nothing specific, except by far longer sentences.
The solution is in dropping the verb "sono", and simply using "Forte" (strong). In such a case its meaning extends to both inner and physical strength, the same as in English.

I find it difficult to interpret your expression "my love runs deeper than wounds". Do you mean that your love hurts as a deep wound and runs deeper than it? "to wake" translates to "svegliare" or "destare", so it would be "desta i tuoi sogni". But I never heard it.
We have "ridesta le tue speranze", "reawaken (or revive) your hopes". So, for analogy, it could be translated to "ridesta i tuoi sogni", which can go. The verbs starting with the prefix ri- (re- in English) may indicate a repetition or simply, as in this case, a strengthening of the action expressed by the verb.

"Beautifull love" is "bell'amore", which sounds very bad and is never said. I suggest you change it to "wonderful love", "meraviglioso amore".

Almost untranslatable because "ricerca (quest)" doesn't takes "for" in Italian, it takes "of". So you have two "of", one for milk and one for immortality. The result is very bad. If you can live with "Cheese: milk's leap toward immortality" you have "Formaggio: il balzo del latte verso l'immortalità", which works a little better.

I do feel free to help you out, Sara, but problem is, you should know what best fits your feelings. You have in mind "one step at a time", "un passo alla volta", which is not the top of courage and strength (it's the top of perseverance), then you pass to something along the lines of courage and strength. It's arduous.

"Dove Se Vita Se Speranza" means nothing... literally it means "Where if life if hope" ("se means "if")
"Dove c'è vita c'è speranza" is a literal word-for-word translation of "where there is life there is hope" BUT it is not the correct Italian phrase for what you want to say and would mean very little to an Italian person. The Italian proverb is "Finchè c'è vita c'è speranza" which although literally means "Until there is life there is hope" in this sense would mean 'as long as' or 'whilst' there is life there is hope'.
This is a perfect example of why literal word-for-word translations are a bad idea... you lose the essence of a phrase if you don't translate it's meaning as a whole. People need to understand that languages are different in terms of their structure and emphasis.

Anyway one of the most important things to know is that as in spanish accents are essential...in the sentence "Life IS beautiful" you MUST write "La vita è bella" not "La vita e bella" (which means something like "Life AND beautiful").

i just wanted to comment that in your quote: Quest' la vita e qui il gioire, un' ora di abbrezzo e poi moire -- This is life and this is joy: an hour of embracing and then to die. You spelled the word for "to die" wrong. I believe it is morire and not moire
