It's no secret that Angelina Jolie is fond of tattoos; everyone is familiar with the "Billy Bob" tattoo she got in honor of her now ex-husband, Billy Bob Thornton, then later had covered up. And publicity shots of soccer great David Beckham frequently show his bare back, revealing the names of his sons tattooed in thick black ink. But did you know that these celebrities also have Latin tattoos as well? Angelina's is on her lower stomach (next to a thick black cross that covers up a small blue dragon she got while drunk in Amsterdam) and says, "Quod me netrit me destruit" meaning, "What nourishes me also destroys me." David Beckham's Latin phrase is on his left inner forearm, just below his wife Victoria's name which is misspelled in a Hindi script. The phrase reads, "Ut Amem Et Foveam" meaning "So that I love and cherish."
Although it is now extinct, Latin was once the universal language spoken in Europe as early as the 1st century B.C., and it is a language that we can all relate to as many modern day words are derived from Latin. Today, unless you are attending mass at the Vatican in Rome or in Florida with my grandmother (who still says her prayers in Latin, as she was taught to do in the 1930's) Latin phrases are primarily used among doctors (primum non nocere, which means "first, do no harm") and lawyers (habeas corpus). In fact, many people still use Latin today without even realizing it. Bona fide is Latin for "good faith", ad hoc means "for this purpose" and quid pro quo means "something for something", which is used in modern day banter to mean "tit for tat."
Luckily, unlike the Hebrew and Arabic words and phrases tattoos I discussed previously, Latin phrases are fairly easy to translate for the sake of tattooing. Wikipedia offers an extensive list of Latin phrases, many of which make for beautiful and inspirational tattoos. Yuni.com also features a long list of common Latin phrases.
As with any tattoo that is done in a foreign language not your own, make sure you do your homework. Double check your translation with several sources. Unfortunately, as the Latin language is extinct, you won't be able to find a native speaker. Instead, ensure your translation is correct by either using several online translators or confirming it's accuracy with a Latin scholar.
Here are some Latin phrases to get you started:

Just FYI, all the Latin Translations on this page have seemingly been performed by people who have no insight into the actual usage of the latin language, much less any romantic language for that matter. The grammar is backwards, and some of the words make no sense at all.
Please don't just go out and get these words and phrases tattooed on your body because someone on an unmoderated forum told you it was the proper translation.

this weekend i will be getting (on the inside of my left bicep) "Quod tibi fieri non vis, alteri ne feceris" which means "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" - we all lose ourselves from time to time, so i find this tattoo quite meaningful as its a constant reminder that no matter what others should be treated with respect. we are all fighting our own battles throughout life.

Abi: What I have in my heart I will take to my grave = "Quod habeo in corde meo adimam ad sepulcrum meum".
Please note there are multiple vocabulary words for terms like "heart" and "grave" so if the words presented don't strike your fancy I can provide synonyms.

One thing you need to know about Latin that makes it very different from English is that Latin is a highly inflected language, meaning word order does not matter. If you don't like the look of the way words are arranged you can always switch them up. For example:Puella iacit pupam, pupam habet puella, habet pupam puella, puella pupam habet, etc. all mean the same thing (The girl has a doll).

I am looking at getting a tattoo in latin on the back of my neck to say love is the essence of life. I am having trouble finding an image of how i want it. i want it going down the back of my neck not too big, what font would i use. i like the tattoo on the page above which says time waits for no one, and wanted the style like that but with the writing going down? any suggestions?

Dizzy: Much like any other language, Latin is very colorful with many ways of saying the same thing. "Aspera" means a rough going or difficulty whereas "adversum" is more of an opposition or having something actively push against you. Either word could easily mean adversity, it just depends on which word/mean you prefer. The translation of To the Stars Through Adversity I've most commonly seen is the one above of "Ad Astra per Aspera". Again, if you do not like the word for stars (astra), there are multiple alternatives and even names for stars that might have special meaning to you, like the North Star.
Alex: Know Thyself is "Nosce Te Ipsum" . The Greek would be "ΓοΩΘΙ ΣΑΥΤΟο" (it is pronounced ga-no-thay sow-ton). I have no idea who came up with "temet nosce". "Temetum" is a type of wine and "temero" means I dishonor, but "Temet" on its own is a nonsense word. Mini history lesson: Know Thyself was carved over the enterance to the Oracle at Delphi. It meant that to truly understand what the Oracle would tell you, you needed to first undertand who you are and why you were there.

Some of these tattoos are great others are not so good, I know the old english/gothic script is very popular at this time for tattoos but you can't get a latin tattoo in old english/gothic script because it wasn't invented until hundreds of years after Rome fell. So if its gonna be latin at least make sure its historically accurate.

Just go find a book on learning latin and you'll understand more about your saying. be careful with the translations though, get multipal people who know latin to check it, not all translations are nessisarily acuret, and it depends if your doing literal translation or just for meaning. JUST LEARN LATIN! its easier than one may think.

it isn't carpe, but cape (carpe means something different, the best translation is with cape), so "Cape omnia. Sine metu."
it literally means "take everything (all). without fear." this is the best translation in the spirit of latin language

Ive managed to find 2 translations - 'Omnia de causa fiunt' and 'Omnia causa fiunt'.
Do you know if either of these are correct or even if they make any sense, i would be very grateful.

Hi, I was looking for a translation of .....what does not kill you.....blah, blah....... but I ended up reading all the posts...and what is more interesting and important is how many people feel they need to put this on them......because they survived some thing they thought they could'nt.....LIFE,LOVE,DEATH......and found they are stronger for it, they have come out the other side, and like myself want to remind themselves that it always/mostly turns out OK and we do go on, wiser and stronger for it.....that we heal,like a broken bone, that break is now thcker, stronger and will never break in that spot again.....Makes me feel less alone........also all the other requests for translations were so interesting. Because what we choose to Tattoo on ourselves is hopefully so profound, personal, and meaningful......very insightful, and illuminating!

So i was a bit bored yesterday, and decided to do some of the latest X-lation requests.
Now i'm not studdying Latin on more than a hobby stage, so these might not be 100% - So don't blame me for trying, t'is freakin' hard laguage :)
Be aware that i use comma's in the latin translations, now this is just something i do as clarification. It is rarely that you see a comma in a latin phrase, except as seperation of listed words e.g; "Veritas, Fides, Sapientia" meaning "Truth, Faith, Wisdom".

There's a phrase that goes like this: "Age quod agis."
meaning "Do what you are doing." or "Do well whatever you do."
This phrase is used to remind people to concentrate on the task at hand, rather than scattering their attention. Hope that is what you're looking for.

That one that's labeled "Hate the living, love the dead"... that's not what it says. Looks like "contemno victus/diligo silenti etc" Yes, it actually says "etc.", et cetera on the end. Pretty much nonsense, though the words "I hate" and "I love" do occur in it.
I'm pretty familiar with Latin, and i would strongly advise against using Animus' translations in the comments. All of them are way off. Let me add a few more 'y's. Wayyyy, wayyyyy off. Only use them if you don't really care that much what your tattoo says. Maybe you don't. Who knows?

well, when you find one that doesn't charge $125/hr &/or replies within two months, please let us know. college professors usually just tell you to learn the language yourself or that they don't believe in tattoos. priests are not too keen on translating either. hopefully for most, the internet is a last resort resource for something that's inked permanently on the only body we'll ever have.

wow ashley you can't be serious about having finished your FIFTH, i repeat, FIFTH year of latin.. i don't know how to put it nicely so i'll simply say that you're completely ignorant for the language, both its grammar and vocabulary.. and later you say you're no expert and that you're "a tad rusty" - you can't be THIS rusty after having learned the language for five years, plus you say you've JUST finished your fifth year, you know i'm guessing you're lying.. you can't even imagine what kinds of stupid thing you wrote to those people, if you care to know i'll be more than glad to tell you what you exactly said.. and you can't say that these online translators are amazing - they're completely opposite.. those are machines for god's sake!! that's a really poor help with translating, especially since latin is way more complex than english.. so i hope you had your fun, but i ask you not to translate any more sentences and phrases, especially here, because people tattoo that on their skin and later can't get rid of it, so think about it

hhh i wouldn't have realized it was from harry potter i you hadn't said it yourself although i like the books.. i have them all but translated into my language, i read some in english and some in latin.. wack, right ? :))
anyway, i have a couple of suggestions for the translation: if you'd like, you can change "destruendus" with "delendus".. they both mean the same, and they were both equally used (the fact that the verbs "to destroy" and "to delete" came from the verbs from which these words are derived speaks for itself) so it really doesn't matter which one you use. and as for the second suggestion, you can use "nex" instead of "mors" (death), mors was actually a lot more used than nex, but when i'm translating something for myself, especially if it's a proverb or something like that i prefer nex, but it's up to you of course

to tell you the truth, i don't know what this that Nietzsche wrote is supposed to mean, it really doesn't make much sense, that's why i can't give you a translation for the sentence, so i'll translate word by word: "hoc"="this one" in neuter gender, "non"="not", verb "perire" means "to disappear/die/collapse" so the best word to translate it with would be "to perish" (i even think that it came from this latin verb), "pereo" is 1st ps.sg. present - so "i perish", "habebo"="i will have" (i must warn you that the verb "habere" (to have) is always used as "to possess", in latin it is not an auxiliary verb - i don't know whether you live in an english-speaking country, if you do, i'm just saying so that you wouldn't understand it as future perfect tense), "forior" doesn't mean anything at all, "me"="me" - it's accusative case of the personal pronoun "ego"="i"
"qoud non me necat, fortior me facit" isn't all that wrong except for this "qoud", but there is no need for literal translation of "to make stronger", beacuse in latin there is already a verb with that meaning - "firmare"="to strengthen/make stronger".. "firmat" is 3rd ps.sg. present (in indicative mood) - "it strengthens" (in latin there is no need for using pronouns with verbs (just like in my language) because conjugation of a verb is different for every person - in english only 3rs ps.sg. (and only in present) is different, e.g. i/you/we/they work, but he/she/it works), and as for this "necet"... it comes from the verb "necare"="to kill", necet is 3rd ps.sg. present but in subjunctive mood (in indicative mood it would be necat).. since this is a relative clause, the verb in the subordinate clause (in this case: what doesn't kill me) has to be in subjunctive mood, so "necet", not "necat".. this is going to probably sound silly, but if there was a time machine and you somehow get to ancient rome, people would understand what you want to say even if you said this sentence with "necat" instead of "necet", but they would guess you are a stranger and that latin is not your mother tongue. this sort of mistakes were typical for little children who were too little to understand latin syntax rules.. if you'd like to know more about this, it's called "consecutio temporum" (literally "time corresponding") just so that you make sure that i really did give the correct and best possible translation, although i assure you that there is no need for that, i fully stand behind everything i write cause i'm aware that people come here for tattoo ideas, and a tattoo is something you can hardly get rid of.. i mean i know a lot about latin, but of course i can't know all, so whenever i'm translating something if i'm not 100% sure, i always say so and ask the person whether he wants me to consult with my professor.. here there is no need for it, cause i am 100% sure, and i even, if i'm not wrong, already consulted my professor about this one a while ago, cause people often want this one

now, this is exactly what you wanted, however i do have a couple suggestions depending on what you really want to say (this what i gave you is very simple) - latin is a very rich language so it enables many things..
first of all instead of venit you can put advenit - these verbs both mean "to come", but "advenire" (infinitive) means sort of to come after being expected and wanted, it can be comprehended as to come to one's rescue
and as for the word fortitudo (strength) it's more of a physical strength (like muscles and that).. now, if you'd like you can use "ops" - it's power/strength as something sort of surreal, or better said supernatural. it was even used as a personal name (female), so you can tattoo it with a capital "o" (Ops) - it was also written this way in literary works, especially in poems and plays (if in plays, then it was a deity or a supernatural force that for example solved problems like fights/quarrels/struggles etc.)... there was also a deity by that name, she was a fertility godess actually, but only in one of the latin tribes (i'm not 100% sure, but i think it was sabine tribe, i think that's how they're called in english - in latin it's sabini; i know a lot about latin mythology, but general latin mythology, this was, as i already said a regional deity).. i'm saying this so you wouldn't think i made it up or something like that - in general latin mythology (the overall accepted one) it was this force i've already described..

about this "quod" you can either understand it as a mistake or translate the phrase like this: "THE ONE WHICH nourishes me destroys me" (without "also", cause there is no in the latin sentence, so there can't be one in the translation)
but literally "quod" only means which (in neuter gender)
maybe you'll understand better in spanish: "quid" -> "que"; "quod" -> "quien"

"live life" -> "vitam vive", but vive here is in imperative, so it's kind of an order, maybe it would be better to use subjunctive mood (vivas) cause then it's more of an encouragement, so "vitam vivas"

"nullus" actually means "none", but in this case you can comprehend it as "there is no..". i also have a suggestion for you - in latin there are a few words for fear: "timor", "metus", "vereor", "terror", so you can use any of these. however, "terror" is somewhat stronger in meaning than the other ones (it's a great fear; when used in ancient rome, it often included violence too - that's why this word has spread in many languages as what we now know terror is), i think that that is not what you really want, but all of the others would be just fine, use which ever you like the most

instead of "impotentia" you can use "incapacitas", but i must warn you that this word wasn't used in ancient rome, but in medieval times (latin was still very much spread in europe despite the fact that the roman empire had fallen), the word came to use from vulgar latin (vulgar meaning folk, so the form of latin used by common people -> the one i study is classical latin used by people of higher social status - like politicians, poets, nobility... - these two forms of latin had many differences in vocabulary, but in grammar too).. so if you want it all to be in classical latin you can only use "impeditio" which is more "hidrance", but can be comprehended as "disability"
and one very important thing: the word "impotentia" is in feminine gender, but "incapacitas" and "impeditio" are in neuter gender, so if you decide to use one of these, you must change "ea" into "eo" ("... quid ex eo facias")

since this expression sounds somewhat like a proverb, here's what you can do to make it sound more like that in latin: for word "death" instead of "mors" (in nominative case; in ablative case it's morte like in my translation) you can use "nex" which was less used than "mors", but that's what makes it a bit special, especially in situations like this.. if you decide for word "nex", you have to put it in ablative case -> "nece", so "amor fortior nece (est)".. and now the reason i put "est" (is) in brackets: as i already said, this sounds a bit like a proverb, and ancient latin proverbs very often excluded the verb "to be", especially if it was in 3rd ps.sg. like in this case

"death by my hand" -> "mors/nex a manu mea" mors and nex mean the same (death), he can use which ever he likes more, i already said it here - nex was used less often, that's why i consider it more special in these kind of expressions, when translating something for myself i usually use nex cause i have a feeling it's more illustrious, mors is really a common word...
"death before dishonor" -> "mors/nex ante dedecum"; mors/nex - the same thing as the one above
"truth, virtue, justice" -> "veritas, virtus, iustitia"
"vengeance" -> "vindicatio/vindicta" those are synonyms, doesn't matter which one is used
"friends above any other" -> "amici super cetera"

My friend has "Dum Spiro Spero" on his chest. It has similar sparrows to the ones in the picture that shows the "Ad Astra Per Aspera" tattoo. The sparrows are under his collar bones and under the sparrow on his right hand side it says "Spiro" and under the left hand side it says "Spero". The "Dum" part is in the middle. i feel the need to clarify with people that latin was in use for over 4000 yrs and has gone over SEVERAL hundreds changes in language like english has each generation brings something different and change the meanings of words and cases and verbal phrases change to the point that it could not be understood by people still speaking latin,try and read an old english manuscript you can't, So before you tat any latin on your body know all the possible translation i.e carpe diem "sieze the day" can also be understood as "rape the day".....all that being said i have studied latin for about 3 yrs and feel very good about the following translations,in classical latin:

no regrets= non paenitentiae (noun phrase like i live with no regrets)

circa 1991, being both a latin and spanish student, I can tell you this is definitely spanish, which I hope you already knew that though.
it means Dream that your life is for always, live as if you are going to die today.
this is a brute literal translation so it will most likely be contested with, but colloquially it would mean in essence the same thing as "dream as if youll live forever; live as if youll die today"

There are many ways to say this but the best would be
Ne timeas/metuas et vinces.
Ne timeto/metueto et vinces.
timeas and metuas are synonyms for "to fear"
vinces(you shall win) can be replaced in both sentences by
praevalebis(litteraly you shall be the one in the front in terms of beeing strong) or by superabis (you shall be at the top/climb to the top).
Of all combinations my choise is "Ne timeto et superabis."

For everyone that's saying to use dictionaries and things, there are various words in latin that can be used to translate one word in english. Like there are multiple words for excellent and sweetly, etc. And you can't just look at a dictionary because you have to make sure you have the right ending for the word also. Because there is different endings for femine, masculine, neuter, genetive, ablative, and so on. So if you are lookin to get a tattoo in latin, I would advise you to seek help from someone who speaks or teachs latin instead of using dictionary.

the reason you've probably gotten different ways to say that is that there is no one way to say it. Also word order doesn't really matter in Latin, so you can rearrange them in basically anyway.
Also, you cannot translate an English phrase into Latin word by word as someone suggested above. Latin is a little more complicated than that because of something called declensions and other Latin grammar rules. I'm not trying to promote anything here, I'm just warning you.

The Truth is you should probably get a professional translator if your serious about your tattoo and especially if it is an uncommon phrase or a phrase not latin in origin. The problem is that there are five different ways of saying anything in latin. The sex of the speaker, the tense, and probably most important: the number of half-assed latin translations on google mean that you could very well end up bragging about how cool your tattoo is to someone... only to have them google it up and show you your tattoo is in the female form... how embarrassing right? It'll be even worse than the drunk ass "Knowledge" tattoo you got in thailand that really says "Sticky Rice"... you know who you are sticky rice guy...

Despite the fact that Google have released it without any obvious warnings about its accuracy, it is extremely prone to error, often bizarrely so. Actually, 'illegitimi non carborundum' is not a nonsense phrase, but it is also not straight latin. It was a war motto used primarily during WWII meaning "don't let the bastards grind you down." This motto is a MOCK-latin APHORISM. Meaning it is a derivative of latin. There is no latin word for BASTARD, the latin word for bastard translates to fatherless-child, which would not fit the quote. I have this tattoo on my forearm, and I love it.

Just a tip, I'm studying latin and if anyone wants a tattoo, CHECK WITH SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS IT. Most of the translations I've read here are very.. very wrong. It's not the kind of language where you can look up the words yourself in a dictionary, or use an online translator. Find a professor at a university or something. By the way, "Yloh Tihs, Staht Gnorw" is "Holy shit, that's wrong" backwards. And for the person who wanted to translate "thy shall never be forgotten", thy actually means "your", as in "your apple". I'm guessing you don't want to say "your shall never be forgotten."

The suggestion given, that is 'ego operor is quoniam Volo ut , ego operor is quoniam ego can, ego operor is quoniam vos said ego couldn't' has the following problems:
- Of the 20 words, 11 are wrong.
- Of the 11 that are wrong, three are still in English, not Latin!
- Of the 9 that are right, several would be better if changed or removed; my own recommended translation would not contain any of the same words as those suggested.
Moral of the story? Online translators DO NOT WORK!

Listen to the above comment - next to none of the translations posted above are correct. I have a degree in Latin and I wouldn't feel comfortable translating some of those phrases - it's not just a case of getting the right words, but of getting the right tense and case etc etc. Online translators are rubbish - make sure you ask someone who actually knows what they're talking about, and can explain to you why they've chosen to phrase it in that way.
Also, once you have the translation - double and triple-check the spelling, especially as it goes onto the transfer. I have seen more than one mistake that neither the tattoo artist or the person getting the tattoo picked up on, because they weren't familiar with the language.
Finally - a lot of common phrases (e.g. know thyself; love conquers all) have been previously translated or are actually derived from Latin texts - use these where possible. Translation from Latin isn't word for word, so don't dismiss something because you've read an ever-so-slightly different translation elsewhere.

google is ok i done mine but just needed a bit of help to confirm it. with google its a case of tying in words seeing what matches i.e. if you do i deserve to be happy individually it comes up with lots of invidual words but type in a few at a time i.e. i deserve to, it comes up with one word meaning that, then retype back any that was on the list it gave you and see which best matches up! thats what i did hope that helps

Latin is, unfortunately, absolutely NOT in ANY WAY fairly easy to translate (for tattoos or otherwise)!! It uses no less than six different cases for adjectives and nouns (which can be masculine, feminine, neuter, singular or plural and change their endings according to the grammatical role they play in a sentence) and five different conjugations for verbs (which can themselves be indicative or subjunctive, active or passive).
I have studied Latin for the past six years and have recently qualified as a Classics (Latin and Greek) teacher. I absolutely promise you that anyone using an online Latin translator (even Google!) is almost 100% certain to come away with a translation that is complete nonsense: Latin grammar (especially in phrases) is simply too nuanced and complex to be translated this way (and the online translator will likely give you a word for word translation, which, without the correct verb and noun endings, literally makes absolutely no sense at all, however pretty it looks).
That's not to say that Latin tattoos are a bad idea though! The language itself is ancient, beautiful and powerful. Blogs like this are are great way of bringing them to people's attention. Just please, please, please be careful before you have anything in Latin permanently etched on your body!

Claire.. Read - there are a couple of ways of saying "forever" in Latin:
1. semper (means "always")
2. in aeternum (means "eternal", "everlasting")
Nate - the words "ego me" together (with no other words in the sentence) don't really mean anything at all!
"ego" means "I (myself)" and is used for emphasis. "me" also means "I (myself)" but is in a different case to "ego" (so the two words look totally different).
Together, they literally mean "I myself I myself"! Really hope you didn't already get a tattoo of that...!!

"A higher power has saved me" looks like this in Latin:
maius imperium me servavit
'maius' means 'greater', which is the sense of "higher" that you want (because you don't literally mean "higher" as in, e.g. an apartment on the third floor is higher than an apartment on the ground floor!!)
"imperium" means power. Lots of words for "power" in Latin. This particuar word means power in the sense of "authority" and it's a really strong word - the Romans used to talk about the "imperium Romanum" to refer to the power of their empire (which was enormous).
"me servavit" - (it) has saved me ("it" being the higher power).
No capital letters in the whole phrase (Latin doesn't have them except for proper names and places).

I've translated four out of your six requests into some pretty awesome Latin. The remaining two are a little difficult to translate, because we have a lot of idiom in the English language, which, if translated literally into Latin, doesn't really make any sense. Quite often you have to find a different way of phrasing what you want to say, and then it works.
The Latin translations I've given you below, if you translate them freely into English, mean pretty much exactly what you want them to say. I've just given you a literal translation of them too, so you can see how the Latin works. So:
2) Never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about:
2) si quaedam res est de qua cotidie cogitas, noli eam cedere
(literally: "If (si) there is (est) a certain something (quaedam res) you think about (de qua... cogitas) everyday (cotidie), don't (noli) give up on (cedere) it (eam)"
3) my guardian angel always by my side

(literally: "You are (es) the protector/guardian (patronus) of my soul (animae meae), (you are) always (semper) near (ades))
(*note: I've used "guardian of my soul" to mean "guardian angel" because Latin doesn't really have a word for 'angel' in the sense we mean it, because the Romans didn't believe in angels as we do now (so it makes sense that there wouldn't be a word for it!)
5)What doesnt kill me makes me stronger
5) quod non me destruit mihi potestatem dat
(literally: "What (quod) doesn't (non) destroy (destruit) me (me) gives (dat) me (mihi) strength (potestatem)
6)What is for you wont pass you

(literally: "if (si) this is (haec... est) your destiny (sors tui), it (ea) will not (non) lie hidden (latebit)
OR

So sorry it's taken me a few days to reply! Giselle is absolutely correct about the difference between "diligo" and "amo". You want the meaning of "amo" (so use this word).
I'm struggling a little with the idea of "yourself", and what case it should be in for this particular saying. I guess "nosce et ama te ipsam" could very well be correct, but I'm not 100% sure - so sorry (maybe I'm thinking too deeply about it though! It certainly looks right).
Maybe bear in mind that "ipsam" refers only to girls, so if you're talking only about yourself, "ipsam" is correct. However, if you were talking more generally, you might want to use "ipsum" instead (masculine/neuter).
Worth remembering that Latin doesn't have capital letters at the beginning of a sentence (only for proper names and places) so whatever you decide to go with, don't put a capital letter at the beginning!

I know it's a bit more popular and I've seen a few examples, but I have come across two different translations, and I want to find out which one is correct. You forgot to include the conjugated form of esse (the verb to be) for feminae. It's sunt.
Oh and perhaps use vita instead of animae... animae is closer to the word spirit.
Also, wouldn't amor, passio, vita and dolor all be in the nominative case?

Yes I see sunt should be used however I did intentionally choose animae over vita becasue of it being closer to spirit. I think that comes closer to the meaning I'm going for.
I can use wikitionary and Google translate but I haven't studied how to use Latin except for looking up several dubious translations, so I was forced to guess a little.
But doesn't the using the genitive case mean that women are the source of these things vs. the nominative meaning women simply do these things? Or am I just using poor Latin grammar?

The genitive is used to show possession... among other things but that's neither here nor there.
If you mean to say that women are the source/cause/reason
/origin of these things, yes... absolutely put them (love, pain, etc.) into genitive. Use causa(cause/reason) or perhaps origo(origin/source)-there is also conservatrix, however it's closer to keeper/protectress- but keep it in the nominative...I would actually make these plural as well, as they should agree with the subject (feminae).
If you want to say that women create these things (love, pain, etc.), do not use esse at all. I would use pario,-ere or facio,-ere... probably parere as it means to bring forth or to birth. Conjugated for this purpose would be pariunt. If this is closer to your liking, put love, passion, pain and spirit in the accusative.
Try to place the verb at the end of the sentence. It is most frequently located there.
Ex: Feminae amorem passionem animam et dolorem pariunt.

Ah! Creo, creare... forgot about that one! It's translated as create/produce/elect/choose. I think it was even used for appointing someone to office.

As someone who has a pretty good understanding of Latin, here's my advice. For everyone who had found conflicting translations of the same English phrase: those translations may not be wrong because there are many different ways to say the same thing in Latin. I would recommend that you check with someone who has a firm grasp of the language and not rely on the Internet or just a Latin dictionary to give you a correct translation before you have it tattooed on yourself- it could very well be wrong.
Also, I have no idea if someone has already pointed this out, as I have not been all the way through the comments, BUT illegitimus non carborundum is not actually a Latin Phrase. It's a quote from Margaret Atwood's novel The Handmaid's Tale. It doesn't actually mean "don't let the bastards get you down.". I certainly hope the girl who got that tattoo knows that.

If you are fluent in Latin by all means but god you all are just like "oh angelina and beckham did it, I'm gonna get latin on me I'm so fucking cool" no you're fucking not. I've seen to many people who think they're hot shit and get a tattoo in spanish and then someone who's fluent in the language tells them that it says I like to eat donkey shit. I'm currently learning german but you don't see me running out getting Ich Heise Michael Beck on my body. God you are all such followers who probably will get the "I won't be led, I lead" will if someone is leading then someone is always following so I always thought that quote was moronic. Getting a tattoo you in a language you don't understand might as will be the same as getting a tattoo that says "I love" and the name in the heart is some random person you never met. And that's what really grinds my gears.

Good luck with your Latin tattoos. But please, please do not trust someone from an unregulated forum to translate Latin. All of the translations I've seen above are garbled, and a couple of the tattoos are incorrect too. If you want to translate something into Latin, I suggest finding the contact details of a Latin teacher or Latin professor in your area, and politely asking for their help. But really, I have to say that in my opinion, if you want a Latin tattoo, you would be better off looking at a list of Latin quotes and picking one that matches what you want to say. Classical Latin was spoken 2000 years ago - a lot of the ideas inherent these tattoo ideas are simply alien to Roman culture. There's no phrase meaning 'Daddy's girl' for example. A Roman would probably say, 'filia pia', 'loyal daughter' to express the same concept. 'Puella patris,' which means 'the girl of the father' would be meaningless to a Roman - or suggest that the girl in question was a girlfriend rather than a daughter. Similarly, Elderbrom - the phrase 'eyes on' to mean watching is an English idiom which can't be directly translated into Latin. Deus me spectat means 'god is watching me'.
Imogen - don't get any of those phrases tattooed on yourself, they are wrong.

Translations for Cherry, Kristine and Jenni below. I'm an Oxbridge-educated Classics (Latin and Greek) teacher so (in theory!) a reliable source but wanted to post publicly - rather than email you - in case any other Classicists are reading this and have a better translation/have spotted a mistake. I'm 99% sure these are accurate though, so here goes:
Jenni:
cantus ex corde oriuntur
Literally means "songs/melodies (cantus) arise/are born (oriuntur)from the heart (ex corde)". The verb "orior" (which "oriuntur" comes from) is often used in Roman literature to describe the sun rising in the morning, which I think is a lovely image, and therefore well-suited to the idea of music arising from the heart. Just a warning: “corde” (“heart”) literally means the organ of the heart (and I don’t think you mean that music literally comes out of your heart (!), but I’m also pretty confident that “corde” has a more figurative meaning (it can be used to talk about the mind), so it should still work here.
Kristine:
amor matris numquam desinet
Literally means: "the love (amor) of a mother (matris) will never (numquam) end (desinet)"
As 'love' is an abstract idea, it doesn't have physical, concrete 'limits' the way a city has a limit (for example). I hope saying that it will never stop or end is the kind of idea you're looking for.
Cherry:
infantia mea mihi roboravit
Literally means: “my (mea) childhood (infantia) has given strength (roboravit) to me (mihi)”. A couple of things to be aware of with this translation though: “infantia” really means “infancy” – so only when you are a very young child (it doesn’t really cover the idea of when you were “growing up”).
Secondly, “roboravit” (“has given strength to”) is an awesome word and is linked in language to “robur”, which in Latin means strength, but also “oak” and “oak-wood” (the idea of being as strong as an oak-tree is a beautiful idea, in my opinion!). However, I think it has a more literal sense, as in, for example, that drinking a protein shake and working out gives you strength (!), rather than that learning from your past has made you figuratively a stronger person (but if you went with “roboravit”, you could get an oak leaf or tree as part of the tattoo, which would be so cool!). Definitely something to be aware of though!
My second suggestion, then, would be to re-word your phrase (which almost always has to be done to translate English into Latin):
potentior factus sum propter res quas superavit
Literally: “I have become (factus sum) stronger/more powerful (potentior) because of (propter) the things (res) that (quas) I have overcome (superavit)”
A final piece of advice to the three of you: if you decide to go ahead with the Latin tattoo, EITHER get the whole tattoo in capital letters (very authentic and Roman!) or do NOT get any capital letters at all (not even at the beginning of the phrase) – except for proper names. The Romans did NOT use capital letters at the beginning of a sentence. Choose a good font too! Try a Google image search of “Roman inscription” to get an idea of what Roman (i.e. Latin) writing looks like for real!

Cherry - I've just re-read my second translation for you and I've made a mistake! It shouldn't be "superavit" but "superavi" (so take the "t" off the end). The whole translation would then read,

Hey everyone, just a few quick notes (as a latin student myself)
NEVER EVER EVER use online translators. They don't work very well-- especially not well enough for something you are permanently inking into your skin. As an example:
'What doesnt kill me makes me stronger is 'Quis doesnt iuguolo me,makes mihi validus"
"doesn't" and "makes" are not the same words in latin!
Online translators turn tattoos into permanent jibberish.
If you want a tattoo in Latin, please email an university professor and ask for a proper translation.
