Of the thirteen tattoos I have permanently inked onto my skin for all time, four of them contain words or phrases. There's a single word on my lower stomach that hails from the Elvish language created in the "Lord of the Rings" saga by J.R.R. Tolkien, "wake your dreams" is on the back of my neck, "i only want now" is located on my lower back, and a Polish quote that means "anything I could desire, I already have" wraps around my upper bicep. As an avid reader and obsessive writer, I have maintained a love affair with the written word since learning how to read at age four. No matter how many times I tell myself, "Okay, my next tattoo is going to be an image", I always seem to end up getting more words.
We use words to convey meaning and express desire, to give solace and provide comfort, to impact and inspire. Getting someone's name tattooed can be a permanent memorial of a loved one who has passed away; inking the initials of your partner's name on your body can represent your eternal committment to one another; a quote from a favorite book or movie can serve as a daily reminder to live the ideals expressed in that particular saying.
And with so many different languages in the world, the possibilities are endless. Famous actress Angelina Jolie has a Pali incantation written in Khmer, the native language of her adopted son's birthplace, Cambodia. Others choose Japanese "kanjii" characters to represent the word or phrase they want to display. Keep in mind, however, that if you get a tattoo in a different in a place that is easily visible to passersby, you will constantly be asked the same question over and over again without fail: "What does your tattoo mean?"
If you're thinking about getting a tat, keep in mind that ideas are all around us at any given moment. If you have a favorite song lyric, instead of getting the actual words, think about getting the corresponding music notes or guitar tabs. If you're interested in getting yours or someone else's name, select a fancy font like Old English to make it interesting. Binary and barcode tattoos are also very popular right now because websites like Nickciske.com can be used to turn words and phrases into a series of numbers that only you will be able to understand. I am constantly on the lookout for new tattoo ideas, and currently I am considering two in particular: a quote by artist Kurt Halsey tattooed on my wrist that says "we are more than most will ever know" or a line from Dr. Seuss' children's book The Lorax which reads "unless someone like you cares a whole awful, nothing is going to get better--it's not."

I Like the Heaven one, the last one, I'm 20 and have 4 tattoos, my first when I was 16. A few weeks ago my best friend was killed by doormen in front of me. Theres an amazing punk song written by a band who are friends of mine called Not Indestructable which to me really describes him and his last moments. Last night I had 'Not Indestructable' tattoed on my wrist.

mines a butterfly inbetween my shoulder blades and in tiny letters above it says 02 - 12 - 86 ( my birtthdate )
my younger sister has the same butterfly on her lower back with a design around it. and above it in hand writing it says 'forgive me for' and underneath it says 'my sins'
and our youngest sister got 'forgive' on one wrist, and 'forget' on the other.

i am going to get a tattoo that says "hold fast to your dreams, for without them life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly." a quote by langsten hughes. and then i am going to have a sparrow with it. it basically talks about following through with your dreams, and not letting anything hold you back. which is a huge part of my life. i was a foster kid, and was always told to follow my dreams... now i am a certified cosmetologist at 18, living on my own, in an upscale neighborhood i might add, and am extremely happy with my life. i also want to wright a book, i feel i can be a huge insperation to all kids growing up in foster care. :]

Im not sure if u want a quote or not but if u want something special for your mom you could get script on your rib cage saying "never to have suffer would never to have been blessed" with ur moms birthdate underneath the quote. it reminds you of your mom but also reminds you that u are blessed with happier times ahead of you.

I found a very nice quote it's latin, but i love the translation. Dum spiro spero or "as long as I breath, I hope." It also translates into "while I breath, I hope" but I perfer the first. It was a wrist tattoo and I loved the idea of it.

Soo..I have one tattoo. Chinese Symbols meaning, "Passion, strength, and fire." On top of it is a butterfly flying away from it. From the chinese symbols to the butterfly are 4 small stars sort of looking like star dust of my family's birth stone. I'm kinda thinking about adding on to it somehow? Got any ideas?

Hey ppl there's s great ideas on this site. I'm really struggling to come up for sum quotes to fit my tattoos. At the minute I have two tattoos... A tribal panther and an angel on my back. The angel covers the top half of my back. In a way it is similia to David beckhams backpiece. For the past two years I have been searching for a quote which will match this tattoo... I think it is great that so many people are embracing different languages and ways of expressing themselves, but I want to remind you that you should be VERY cautious when getting your quote translated - not everything can be translated word for word.
This is ESPECIALLY true for Latin . . . each noun has 10-30 (roughly) possible different endings, depending on what it does in the sentence, whether it is singular or plural, and what gender it is. Each verb has about 60 different possible endings depending on who, what, when, where, etc. . .
It might be too late, but the person who wanted
"Degero Tui Somnium" will be getting a tattoo that means "I will have spent time on a dream of you"
There are LOTS of words in Latin that mean "live," and degero is okay, but it really implies wasting time to an extent...
I would say "vive somnium tuum" (live out your dream) or "agita somnium tuum" (live your dream in the sense of "make it happen"), but using the words you chose the most correct version would be "dege somnium tuum" (spend time on/pursue your dream).
As you see, it's complicated. No native Latin speaker is going to come up and mock you and if it means something to you that is great, but I would be embarrassed to permanently mark myself with something that doesn't quite mean what I thought it meant (just like the people who get Japanese symbols only to later find that it means something silly later on).

If you don't believe me about translators, do this experiment:
Step 1: Take your favorite song lyrics in English and translate them into another language using a translator program.
Step 2: Take the translation and re-translate that back into English using the same (or another) program.
Step 3: Grab your friends and laugh/cry at the horrible butchering of your favorite song. . .

I have a total of 3 tattoos.
1: 3 stars on my rights foot that are all different colors and get progressively larger. There is a sort of swirl that connects all 3 of them together. This was my first one because I wanted something simple and small in case I found I couldn't bear the pain!
2: This is a very personal tattoo to me and was gotten for a very personal reason. It's a Latin phrase which is "alis volat propriis" which translates to "she flies with her own wings" I have this on my upper, middle back with a set of angel wings coming down around the words. it was done beautifully by a friend of mine and it really one of my most meaningful possessions. I am extremely attached to it.
3: This is also a very meaningful tattoo to me and also on a personal level. It's a small puzzle piece outline that is on the inside of my left wrist and it has my younger sisters initials in it. We got them together tonight actually. We chose the left side because the heart is more to the left and therefore we're closer to the heart. She has the same one in the same place with my initials in it. It's really neat because when we hold our wrists together, the puzzle pieces fit together. It's to symbolize that she is my other half and we complete each other.

1)sacrifice in old English across my back from shoulder to shoulder (represents sacrificing things in order to where u wanna get in life and my struggle)

Love the site. I just recently had my wrists done, with "Stay Gold" in a creative writing done in black with gold on the top of the letters and white outlining.

I'm getting my first tattoo in a few weeks. I'm thinking of getting either "Always forgive, Never forget" or "What is past is prologue". Either one I'm getting, I'm getting it on my side.
Also, when I was in junior high, I was extremely depressed and would cut my wrists. I'm thinking of getting "HOPE" tattooed on my wrist because if I had just a sliver of hope back then, I wouldn't have done it. What do you think?

I have a dreamcatcher on my back that I designed, the 3 feathers are of a peacock, bluebird and hummingbird, the circle is the ouborous snake (bites it's own tail to symbolize never ending), the inside is a leopard face with a butterfly blended in... the leopards eyes are on the butterflies wings. There is a ladybug running around the outside, and the word "Taibhrigh" which is the verb to dream in Irish Gaelic. I want my back to be completely done with the theme of dreams and originality. So i need some suggestions please! I have the Japanese Kanji symbol for "Poison" tattooed on the inside of my left wrist. It has its own personal meaning to me, and i could spend hours tryng to explain why i chose that word. In a nutshell... I once felt as though i was a poison and everything and everyone i loved would eventually become infected and die or leave me... no im not THAT depressed.. i had just lost my best friend and fiance in the same year and while i have overcome those feelings, i never want to forget that there are poisons in the world.. but there are also antidotes. I'm 15 and this year my dad bought a tattoo machine and has decided to start tattooing. He's already done a few on himself and they look awesome. He done my first tattoo for me about 1 month ago, it's 'Aotearoa' written in fancyish writting on the outer side of my right foot, It mean New Zealand in Maori.
I decided to get that because i have lived in NZ since i was 7 years old with my mum, and i officially call myself a kiwi now, and 6 months ago i moved back to Finland to my dad's. But i realized just how much NZ means to me, and i reall want to move back, but i've got to get my schooling finished first.

My dad passed away when i was 13, at the moment i think im going to get his date of birth on my wrist, with something else under it. Firstly.. WOAH that took years to read.
Secondly, I am from Australia :) and am 17 turning 18 in a few months. I already have one tattoo on the inside of my left ankle that simply says "One Life, One Chance", I got it about 6 months ago and I like it because it's self explanitory and always reminds me that I've been blessed with the gift of life & I have one chance to live it and do it right. I knew it was right because I wanted it for years before I got it.
Anyway, I want to get another one after I turn 18 on my ribs, but I'm not sure what to get, I want something that's either:

- One for my mother. Or..

I have Mors nos non disiungit tattoed on my chest which means death will not part us, Amor vincit omnia on my wrist which means love conquers all and also my sons name and dob in elvish on my forearm.

Hey...alright so I want to get a tattoo on my wrist. I have been thinking and re searching for about 6 months and nothing has sounded perfect. But I want either a quote or a symbol on my wrist symbolizing a whole lot wrapped into one. i have gothic angel wings the full lenght breadth of my back with the latin phrase "alis volat propiis" - "she flys with her own wings" it can also mean "he flys" i also have 6 others and im currently deciding on a new one tattoos.....one of the only things that are truly our own from artist to grave i love mine!!!!

Those are nice tattoos, I would like to have one image tattooed. My Grandma had plenty of tattoos in her hand, but it was part of religious thing.
