The other day I was watching a documentary on VH1 called "RockDoc: The Last Days of Lisa Lopes". Lisa Lopes, better known as "Left Eye" from the all-girl hip-hop group TLC, was killed in a car crash on April 25, 2002 when she and her crew were driving around in the Honduras. They were at the tail end of a 30-day retreat, led by Lisa, that encouraged practicing yoga, fasting, and drinking only concoctions that would cleanse their bodies. A camera crew had been with the entourage the entire time, intent on producing a documentary about the spiritual and physical awakenings the group experienced. There was also a particular focus on Lisa's interest in numerology, and her belief that every day of the year could be broken down to a number from 1 through 9, with 9 being the day of greatest change. The never-before-seen footage ends when the vehicle the cameraman was traveling in (along with Lisa and six others) swerves off the road and crashes.
Earlier in the film, Lisa spoke of the trials she'd faced in her life, her battle with alcoholism and the media frenzy that ensued when she accidentally burned down the expensive home of boyfriend Andre Rison, football player for the Atlanta Falcons. Regarding the obstacles she'd endured and challenges she had faced, Lisa said, "Every struggle is just a preparation for what's to come." Instantly I knew that I wanted those words tattooed on my body somewhere prominent. And it got me thinking about all the other people in this world who connect so strongly with a word or a phrase that it becomes imperative that they ink the saying permanently on their skin. To quote the lovely Anais Nin: "Before, I almost used to think there was something wrong. Everybody else seemed to have the brakes on. A voice, a phrase was not for them volcanic. I never feel the brakes. I overflow." If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a word must be worth a million stories.

I'd just like to add that this is a super site, i'm currently browsing for ideas on my next tattoo, it's such a difficult choice, i am really swaying towards getting something done in Greek or Latin, down the side along the ribs, again though, it's got to be something that has meaning to me..

I'm interested in understanding why so many people feel the need to advertise their struggles, survivorship, self-image, etc. Do you feel validated only when others get an understanding of you before they know you? Isn't it enough to just know yourself and not worry about what others know? Or perhaps you want to give an impression of who you are rather than let someone know who is under the facade....then they might find out you are not really that different from the norm. Everyone struggles. Everyone survives. Some even thrive. The truely great ones don't have to advertise it. They are secure enough to focus their energies on shining the light on others rather than desperately seeking the light for themselves.

Kimberlee- i understand what you're going through...my grandma passed away in 2008, and for my 17th birthday my parents allowed me to get a tattoo in her honor. My choice was angel wings with a heart, halo, and my grandma's initials inside the heart. It's very special to me, and when I look at it I am reminded of all of our memories, and of her. Don't let what others say stop you- it's beautiful what you're doing! I don't have any ideas though, but I have found some really good sites through google..or maybe there is a specific phrase she used to say to you, or some advice? My friend got a tattoo on her foot that said, "Que sera, sera"..it means what will be, will be. It was a saying her grandma used to say to her, so it means a lot!
Mel- not everyone is looking to advertise what they have been through. In most cases, it's just a way of remembering and honoring that person, not to show off that you've struggled. I got mine because she was the person i loved most, and i felt that getting a permanent remembrance on my skin would bring me closer to her. A lot of people end up regretting their tattoos, but when you get something for someone you love, it's not something you regret, but cherish.

I have 41 tattoos al together and am nowhere close to being done. Some people think alot of tattoos on a girl is tacky, but I think it is a great way to express yourself. One of my favorites I have is a lotus on my upper arm with "never settle" underneath with the domestic violence symbol because I was in an abusive marriage and i finally found the strength to leave, a week later I got that tattoo. IAll my tattoos having meaning behind them. I would suggest that you be 100% sure that when you get a tattoo its something you will never regret. I love alot of these saying. You could get something like "Nothing will bring me down" or something along the lines of how you've been able to hold yourself together through all your hardships. I have yet to have gone through nearly as much a you. But the tattoos that I am really interested in getting are a follows:
1. A small black clotheshanger on my right ankle (the little soft part of skin beside the ball on your ankle)
2. "All Class Darling," in honour of my mom and her best friend who always throw the phrase around. I just don't know where to get this one. Any suggestions?
3. "Just live your life" in small black font with a heart following. This could possibly go on my left wrist, yet I'm not positive.

I have 8 tattoos I love them so much. I have 2 on my belly, shooting stars either side of my belly button. I have 'Mum' on the back of my left shoulder and 'Dad' on the back of my right shoulder. I have one going down my right hand from my little finger and round my wrist, one on my left wrist and the biggest one across the base of my back. The last one on the top of my right shoulder. I believe the lows in life are matched by highs. So dwelling on the past just delays the chances to live life the way it’s suppose to be lived. Don’t waste opportunities to make highs even higher and do all you can to shallow the lows.. Live is about living so live life to its fullest.
